Never renewed a tourist visa, but I have extended my Business Visa's for a month or two no problem. I am on a 1 year multi entry visa. They did recently change the visa regulations so I'm not sure what they are doing now. You now need to prove your flight to and from China for a tourist visa.

Have been living in Guangzhou for the past 5 years. Don't know what it is about living here but I enjoy it and don't see my self moving back to the States any time soon. Yangshou is a nice place to go visit and relax but like you said alot of tourists depending on the time of year your going...
