Did he say anywhere that the plane was in an atmosphere? If it"s in a vacuum, you"d get no lift except possibly from the equal/opposite force from any exhaust gases from the engine if they pointed down at all. Use an electrical engine (or a rubber band if it"s a really tiny plane!) = no exhaust...
