This. I don"t have much to add, this sums up my thoughts on the matter. I thought EQ2 did housing quite nicely. I think their biggest area for improvement was in overall city usage. There was one building for the cheap housing in each of the city areas, and usually a few expensive houses...

Well what I"ve seen of SGW looks pretty good. Glad they"re at this point though. Now bring on the sekrit sauce!

Indeed, I agree. It"s not as quick and easy to get into, but his story is incredibly captivating. Although maddening at times, his willingness to kill off characters makes the overarching plot both more interesting and more plausible. Instead of the typical one person winning against all odds...

As a huge advocate for VG before it came out, my opinion at this point is that tedium as a device for making a game "hardcore" is outmoded. I don"t feel that every new game must be EASY, simply that the difficulty should be presented through content, not mechanics. An engaging story that...

I think there"s a fine line to walk - a combination of durability and xp debt/loss makes death undesirable, but not game-breaking. People shouldn"t dread dying, and want to stop playing for the day if they die once - but at the same time, it shouldn"t be meaningless to the point where any joe...

I liked GW"s too. I mean, it was unbelievably simple, but yet the overall presentation was nice. GW managed to look beautiful without the insane graphics or the wow-style crap graphics.

Very interesting. Obviously, you can"t tell us which you"re considering, but the better graphics comment brings Vanguard to mind (can"t help it!). I applauded Sigil for pursuing a higher standard of graphics than was typical of MMOs, but it backfired and was another reason why Vanguard struggled...

I"d agree with you there, Woad, although like I said, I"d prefer the EQ2 route than the WoW route any day. A happy compromise between the two would be interesting, for sure.

What I meant about the Vanguard UI is that they chose to limit UI mod functionality, rather than the WoW route. While I support the idea, the base UI needs to be simple, functional, and fully usable without any UI"s for that scenario to work properly. Vanguard"s was not. The UI mods were a near...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

That"s what I"m getting at, yes. The UI should have a high degree of out-of-the-box modularity and ability to be customized - resizing windows, moving them, hiding or showing them, etc. Such as EQ2 hotbars, in which you could resize them to any combination that totaled 12 (or even remove some...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I agree with you, to a point, Zhakran. But these base UI concepts - a hotbar with abilities, a player health bar, etc...they"re obviously not WoW creations...WoW was not the first to do them. WoW just had a certain specific layout that seemingly every game since has been eerily similar to. Which...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

But remember, if you"re aiming high, you have to be appealing to everyone...and in some cases, this may mean a large amount of UI-modding freedom. Vanguard tried to go the "looks-only" route, and people still clamored for more functionality and mods - the "I want it like WoW" problem...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Yeah, that"s a great idea - in the same vein as the Wish concept. The problem, of course, is that it would require a very active dev commitment to introducing new content, as not only would things become boring and unused, but they would actually expire.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I LOVED this concept with Wish Online. If only it had actually worked (and the game had actually survived early beta ), it would have been awesome. Mobs that could never be killed again, public monuments documenting these heroic achievements...it sounded so awesome. I would love to see that...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

QFT You"re also right about barrier to entry. I think the thing to do that WoW lost would be to keep some of that air of challenge and a certain mystique to attaining the highest achievements in game. Vanguard went for that, but made the game too tedious and not enough high end stuff...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

That"s acceptable from a base design perspective. Can"t seem to stop referring to Vanguard here, but it"s a prime example of infrastructure problems. Vanguard"s DESIGN (the original one, not what got released) was that - a game by gamers, a game that didn"t make design mistakes of previous...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

IMO, this is a different animal than Vanguard. Vanguard tried to be the "dream MMO" and failed; the 38 game seems to be aimed more at widespread appeal, with a simple, solid, and fun core game. The widespread appeal will come from doing a few things REALLY well, rather than attempting to address...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

True that! IMHO, Developers need to stick to their guns. Listening to players is all well and good, but building a game around AVOIDING certain aspects is just silly. A GOOD game will survive despite flaws, because the whole thing fits together well. It"s not a piecemeal of good things from...
