ANNO 1800

Anyone planning on playing this or in the beta? Just started watching some streams, I've enjoyed this series but it has been a lot of years. Hoping to get into beta to be able to test it out and see if it's worth the time.

I'm a sucker for building games and from what I have seen from streams looks pretty sweet. I Played two of the previous anno games, the future based ones, think it was like 2050 and like 2500 or something.

Time to search around see if I can find an invite somewhere.

It's a fun series albeit very formulaic. The gameplay gets really repetitive after a while and gets boring once you learn the elements involved with growth. Good bit of fun for a casual strategy foray though.

Last one was 2070 and that was eight years ago, which is hard to believe

If anyone is looking for a code for the beta this weekend this worked for me:

Anno 1800 Closed Beta key giveaway

Click that, scroll to the bottom, play the video(I let it go naturally), once it ends a pop up will ask for name/email, just put in fake crap and submit, it earns you points and now there will be a claim reward red button/link. CLick that and it will give you a code, then go the link higher on that page put in code and should register fine. Opened uplay and letting me download now.

I was watching Lirik play it. It looks fun. I'll wait for it to go on sale though. These games go on sale pretty regularly.

If there's no child labor we riot. Why else would I invite filthy irish catholics to my empire if not for the child labor force.

2205 was trash, I enjoyed 2070 and 1404. I haven't watched anything yet, but if they go back to the older systems from earlier games in the series, I am on board.

i fucking loved 1404 and thought 2070 was great. 2205 looked like garbage. good to see them back in the past and not in fictional future where there is a resource crunch yet EVERY FUCKING THING HOVERS.

Confirmed working for me. Saw it on Lirik's stream as well, excited to check it out.

Sigh twice now ran into a bug where my steel shows up in storage, but the counter at the top of the screen still shows 0, so I can't build anything that takes steel beams. Even destroying and rebuilding does nothing.

Played through the entire beta this weekend as far as I can tell. Got to the new world and upgraded my houses in my main city as far as they would go (Artisan, Tier 3?) and unlocked and built all of the available structures.

Overall I had a good time, however I felt the game pace dragged a bit at times. The trade and resource management is fun. The city building feels solid if a bit simplistic. The ship building/combat definitely adds flavor absent from other city builders. One part that felt tedious is basically building the same city over and over each time you colonize a new island. Since the city building itself is fairly simplistic even during one weekend of playing I felt the tedium of basically cookie-cuttering the same build over and over. The strong point I think is the trade and resource management (shipping the right things between islands) and managing supply rates. However, there seems to be lacking basic oversight tools like production rate graphs etc. I kept looking for like a "stats" panel or interface somewhere but it doesn't seem to exist. Since your production is sprawled across multiple cities and buildings, its tedious to try and get a grip on if you are outputting the correct rates of everything. I really hope they add a UI for this before release.

If you're hungry for a city builder/mangement type game, this one is fairly solid and will scratch the itch. However, based on what I saw I think it would be hard to justify paying the full AAA price they are charging. There were three tech tiers in the beta, I'm not sure how many there are in release, but I feel like there would need to be at least 6 or so tiers to have the depth of content to justify that price. Additionally, these tiers would need to come with some interesting new mechanics, but if I'm just doing the same tedious cookie-cutter stuff to get through the next few tiers I'd definitely get bored of it.

Sigh twice now ran into a bug where my steel shows up in storage, but the counter at the top of the screen still shows 0, so I can't build anything that takes steel beams. Even destroying and rebuilding does nothing.

And you sure you aren't mistaking it for the ingots? I made that mistake the first time when trying to build on a new island.

I have run into several bugs:
- Ship pathing can be very funky ignoring direction and just sailing off randomly.
- Escort quests don't work
- Entering new age and banner doesn't go away
- ships travelling from old to new world sometimes won't show up in ship list and are just off the map (if you can find them on the perimeter you can regain control of them

Balance:
- Surplus production seems too easy
- Growing through artisan stage is wasteful as the only jobs for them is sewing machines and windows which you would have to build 5x the factories you need to meet the pop requirement. I think it may be that you don't really need to keep them employed, and this is easy to do since meeting their needs is not hard.
- Lots of gameplay that seems to work around Items you place inside buildings and ships but they seem rare to get unless you focus quests/fighting.
- A pause mode where you can queue orders would be helpful. There are times that you don't need this but once you expand to the new world there can be too many notices all at the same time and it becomes cumbersome
- the wind direction mechanic is a nice detail, but it doesn't seem to really add anything to the gameplay and should probably be nixed.

I have restarted three times and still haven't moved past artisan, there are a lot of resources I haven't seen a use for so there must be a good bit to unlock yet. There needs to be more info screens helping you analyze production flows. It can get very messy and always being reactionary is not as fun.
