Attention all you werewolfs lovers out there: Canada's Space channel just started broadcasting "Bitten" starring Laura Vandervoort (aka Supergirl from Smallville).

I've watched the first episode. Wasn't too bad. And, hey, get to see her ass so that's a bonus.

Thanks for the heads up. I am ashamed to say that I actually read a few of the books it is based off of. While they aren't Twilight horrible, they are still fairly bad if you aren't a divorced middle-aged female. I think it will be a LOT easier to take in television form, to be honest, because we won't be able to know everyone's thoughts, which are invariably focused on something sexual. You'd think that sexual thoughts would be a good thing, but not in a book by a chick, with a chick as the main character. Unless you're a chick.

And Laura Vandervoort is one of my favorites, so I'll give anything she's in at least a try.

I saw it last weekend and thought it had some pretty explicit sex scenes for syfi then saw it was a Canadian feed. It was different enough from teen wolf and Laura is very easy on the eyes. Never heard of the book series though.

Is it a regular syfi station or an import like Lost Girl?

Import. I watched the first episode, and will probably watch the second while I wait for Lost Girl tonight. It was ok, but not great. If Laura weren't in it, I might not even bother with a second episode. Where Lost Girl is cheesy and fun, this is trying to be serious, which is fine...but it just isn't really making me care. I vaguely know about her "ex" Clay from the books, but wow did they make him into a colossal douchebag it seems. Perhaps he'll be different in future episodes, but already in the pilot I hate him and hope he dies. I don't remember him being that big of a cock in the books, but then again the books were filled with all sorts of conflicting chick emotions, so maybe a douchebag to us equates to a strong, virile mystery man in the female mind?

Watched the first two episodes last night.
He's even more of a douchebag in the second episode.

Speaking of which, and maybe this should have a thread of it's own, but I recently started watching MTV's Teen Wolf. I'm almost done with season 1 and, honestly, it's NOT that bad. It's nothing like the 80s movie, I have no idea why they even named it that because I'm sure a lot of people avoided it for that reason.

Granted, it's very CW-ish with the teen romance and all, but it's genuinely funny at times (but it's not a pure comedy) and the characters are great. Girls are hot.

I've watched Teen Wolf up to the latest episode and it's exceeded my expectations, it started off very MTV but it's evolved into a good werewolf show. The lore is decent as they don't overdo the teen drama as much in season two.

So far with 4 episodes in its not too bad. I wonder if it's going to be a straight werewolf show or introduce other supernatural elements, they are playing it very straight so far.

They certainly don't shy away from the ass shots either.

It's from a series of books that include quite a lot of other supernatural elements, but Elena has very little contact with any of the rest of them - she's only the main character for the ones about the stonehaven werewolves, so could go either way.

Show is OK I guess. Kind of a bummer they killed off the ginger guy, he was one of the only characters I liked

Are the books adult urban fantasy or more in the vein of twilight for the middle aged women?

I've read several of them, with various different main characters (all female if I remember correctly), and if I were forced to put them in a category, I'd say they'd be about 4 parts Twilight, 6 parts urban fantasy. Some of the stuff is pretty decent and would make for a really interesting world, but then some of it is just full on "female." If they go the route they went in the books with the Elena/boyfriend/Clay situation, you'll know exactly what I mean. To be honest though, from the way they've portrayed it so far, they might be abandoning that all together, which would be a good thing.

If I remember correctly, there are also some fairly sexed up scenes in the books, which plays right into the Twilight crowd too. Guys watch porn, girls read romance novels.

They weren't terrible, but they certainly aren't Dresden either. Oh, and I've never read the Anita Blake stuff, but from what I understand that really degenerates into kinky romance novel porn. The ones I read by this author weren't anywhere near that bad.

The Anita Blake stuff is straight up porn after the 3rd book or so, they were some of the earliest urban fantasy stuff but it just devolved into vampire/werewolf sex. I'm finding it pretty damn difficult to find decent urban fantasy these days.

I'm finding Bitten engaging enough and I think it's 13 episode season so I'll watch it through unless it takes a hard turn to crap. I'm intrigued by he fact that female werewolves are rare.

That's the best they could come up with on how she becomes a Werewolf? Hey, let's bite my fiance even though there's a 99.5% chance she'll die and let's not even give her a choice on top of it! The show has been pretty decent especially for a Syfy show but that was pretty groan worthy, imho.

That's the touch of authenticity you get from a female author - where the choice between a violent sociopath who forcibly infected you with an incurable disease that he knows killed every other woman who got it and then gets you to help him torture and kill people and the good looking nice guy who is devoted to you is a really tough choice ;p

^ That's bad enough, but there's nothing worse than shows/books in this genre where the main character fucking whines and complains endlessly about being a <insert supernatural being>.
