Boyhood - Richard Linklater's next movie

Fairly typical coming-of-age movie I guess, but with a twist. Linklater cast this kid back in 2002 and has been shooting the movie intermittently for 12 years. Covering him from age 6 to 18. So he really ages before our eyes, dealing with being a child of divorce and all that comes with growing up.

Pretty interesting and ambitious.

Just heard about this movie today. Has a 100% rating on RT.

I had always thought it'd be awesome if someone did something like this, where you shoot over a decade+. But I figured that was ridiculous and pretty unlikely.

Anyway, release is set for July 11th. I may actually get my ass into a movie theater for this one (I hate movie theaters).

Anyone seen this? It was filmed over a 12-year period in order to capture the aging process of the characters. Gets great reviews.

I don't really disagree with their criticisms, except maybe they have forgotten what douchebags teenagers are and how well that nebulous philosophy crap fits shit real teenagers think and say. I also thought they were kind of trying to draw parallels between him and Ethan Hawke's character at that age. In the movie, we saw Hawke really become a man, and it didn't really take place until well into his 30s.

I've always thought Linklater was a sort of unheralded genius, but this movie might be the most overrated of the last decade. Cringeworthy dialogue, ham-fisted political sentiments, and a wholly uninteresting lead character ruined this movie. Patricia Arquette is really hot, though.

Maybe I am giving it too much credit but I didn't think we were supposed to take his political ramblings at 17 seriously. People that age try to define themselves, part of that is by thinking they have all the answers.

But yeah some of the dialogue was just... That whole scene with the stepdad at the table "I'm going to have a drink with dinner, everyone ok with that?" I mean come the fuck on, just put him in a Darth Vader mask and get it over with.

I still liked it, though.

All the scenes involving the alcoholic stepfather are my favorite. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but everything about him is so comical. I'm laughing just thinking about that scene in which Patricia Arquette is lying on the garage floor and the guy comes in and says, "Don't worry. She had a little accident."

Saw that the other day. It left me a bit unsatisfied. It feels a bit like Linklater is afraid of his own project as he is very aware the potential for false 'good ideas' is pretty high and that trying to save the movie with editing and reshoot is not an option without a time machine. As a result he does not do much at all (very few links through time, most 'key moments' off screen, a 'naturalist' approach to the fiction). Still, it is well paced and somewhat fascinating to see the cast grow old. I think he lucked out with the two children because they both turned to be pretty ok.

Side question: when the girlfriend, Sheena, entered the movie I was trying to remember in what I saw her before and couldn't remember. Once home I checkedimdbonly to realize I never saw her before. So... who does she look like? I can't place it. It's in the shape of the mouth... grrr so annoying.

She has Jennifer Garner's mouth and Bar Rafaeli's eyes.

I hate you. Now that you've made me look at her, she seems familiar to me too, but I can't place it. I can sort of see the Garner and Rafaeli thing, but that's not resolving it for me. Now I am going to be thinking about it all day until someone gets it. Fuck!

At this point I have to think it must be a porn star.

I almost convinced myself the answer was Gemma Ward, but then i put them side by side and a doubt subsists...

I briefly considered the chick from The 100, Eliza Taylor, but I did the same thing and it doesn't seem to fit either.

Did I mention that I hate you?
