Dongle that plugs into any TV HDMI port

Send app content from your phone/tablet(supports Android and iOS) to your TV. Netflix, Youtube, etc.

Also send any chrome page from your laptop to your TV.

The device is completely autonomous, it turns your TV on if your TV isn't already on, and it automatically switches to the HDMI input when you send content to it. No need for a TV remote or receiver to switch video inputs. It goes back to your last input(cable/satellite/whatever) once you are done streaming. Everything is controlled via your mobile device/laptop. Volume, pausing, etc. No need to ever touch an actual remote.

Could see many set top boxes like Roku looking fairly obsolete in the span of the next couple months if this takes off. At $35 I don't see why not. Just needs HBOGo and our Rokus are gone and we have less reason to keep the 360 around once we get our PS4.

They made it sound like anyone could make their app compatible with it, if the developer so chooses.

And yeah, $35 is the killer feature. It isn't necessarily any better than a Roku or Apple TV or whatever, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

If it doesn't have the ability to decode various codecs and containers, then no, I don't see it replacing set top boxes.

Well, the device itself doesn't really *do* anything other than accept whatever you are streaming from your phone/tablet/chrome browser. So if you have an app on your device that plays the video you need, hopefully they update the app to be compatible with Chromecast. Basically your phone/tablet is the device instead of a Roku, the Chromecast dongle just accepts video streams from your device.

Sounds like the limitations would be app support and Wi-Fi streaming speed. Which at first glance sound easy to overcome

For.50.bucks I bought one (tax and shipping) before they sell out.We already.have a Google tv upstairs so I will get to compare it to that. I wonder if this could replace so many cables and connectors in offices.

That's hot. I wonder if they will make a wired version. I have an ethernet hub behind my TV already so I would prefer to use that rather than the WiFi that is on the other end of the house.

Looks like it's just a streamer so you wouldn't be able to play your own content on it unless you used something like Plex with Roku.

edit - nevermind, tried a few more times and my order eventually went through, the site must be getting slammed.

It also comes with a voucher for 3 free months of Netflix, good for new or existing subscribers. Nice little perk there to offset some of the cost.

It's for sale on Amazon now. I just ordered mine. Flat $35 (no tax and free shipping). If you subtract the $24 for 3 free months of Netflix I would have paid for anyways, this new little toy only cost me $11.

Good call on the Amazon -- just placed my order. I've been dying for something cheap and simple like this. Sick and tired of dealing with my 360 to watch YouTube and Netflix.
