Can't have a vigilante movie without some type of familial explanation. Either the parents got to go or it's the wife/kids, maybe the dog.

Because America wouldn't want audiences seeing an everyday person deciding to do this without an extreme tragedy happening first as justification.

Kevin Bacon did a remake of this ten years ago.

Death Sentence (2007) - IMDb
Based on the book, "Death Sentence" - the direct sequel novel to "Death Wish", which itself was made into the movie Death Wish (1974) starring Charles Bronson. The Bronson movie spawned four sequels, none of which were influenced by the novel series. The author, Brian Garfield has disliked, and does not care for each of the sequels, due to how it departs from his original character, and theme in the books.

Huh. That's a lot of adaptions and stuff around it. I mean, considering the plot itself has been done every which way a few dozen other times in films too, it seems weird to specifically bother to remake it.

its weird, which is odd to me why they are doing another remake of the same series since its going to be kinda silly for a death wish remake in 2017 with all the surveillance and cellphones in NYC. good luck being a vigilante.

Death Sentence was a really good revenge porn flick too. The SAW guy handled it and did a solid job getting a fresh take on an old story. The setting was believable enough and Kevin Bacon killed it and John Goodman was very memorable.

Dare I say this latest won't hold up to the '07 standard. Its Eli Roth, but Eli Roth version versus SAW/Conjuring guy's version...I gotta leave it with SAW. Eli Roth's "Knock Knock" was a piece of shit.

of all the actors you could pick to depict someone who is seething with rage and takes it out on the scum of the street, why on earth would you pick bruce willis. dude hasn't shown an emotion on screen in years

We can figure by this Roth is going for more of a Hostel angle. A believable dramatic moral descent to darkness won't be as necessary. Also years? Try decades.

The great thing about Kevin Bacon's take on it. The downward spiral was masterful. Dude was a complete desk jockey nerd who had never seen blood in his life. That movie was heavy on the feels, they really developed the family. This movie looks more like a comedy compared to the '07 version.

The SAW dude tells good stories with amazing character development. Conjuring being a prime example. Even if you aren't into horror as a genre, the characters and the plot development hit all the right circuits. Which was a first for me, as I generally don't like horror. Of course Conjuring 2 was closer to your standard horror fare (suffered the same problems as the Ring sequel. once you blow your stack, you have no choice but to resort to additional gimmick)

My guess is Eli Roth wanted someone old-looking way past their prime, but who could also play a badass. And the age thing and his emotionless settled-down demeanor is going to be his descent angle. "Oh man this guy is SO OLD and he's so calm, is he really up to the task??".

Unfortunately without the dramatic moral descent, and the deep development of a family life (seems to be very lighthearted from the Trailer as if he knows he couldn't make a good movie. Its Eli Roth's way of telling us that its shit) I just don't see anyone being bothered to care.

Basically he hired Clint Eastwood. No wait, Clint could actually sell the fuck out of this comedic take on Death Wish-- he hired Bruce Willis.

to be fair though. Charlie Bronson had just one expression his entire career and Death Wish was his biggest movie. he wasnt as old looking as bruce willis though. what happened to that guy, he looks permanently 12 monkeyed.

It will probably be a fun rental or netflix but the tone of that trailer is garbage.

Eastwood has pulled off that type of dark comedy tone they have going in the trailer. Not sure about Charlie Bronson in the original.

This tone they went with really needed Eastwood if not just because Bruce Willis has reached market saturation. The guy has put out so many phoned-in performances the past 10 years, people are just over him. You can only cash so many checks for straight-to-DVD limited release movies before people say "alright stop stop stop".

8 Direct-to-video starring roles in the last 5 years alone. With a large number of limited release starring roles.

Bruce Willis's "comeback" was a lot like Schwarzenegger, quantity over quality. And I do mean lots of quantity...

I think it looks fun and now that SJWs and DNC members are crying about it in going to see it seven times in IMAX.

Well, there's always this bit of holiday cheer: Taxi Driver (1976) - IMDb

The Death Wish motivations seem to be less violent over time:
1. Wife murdered, daughter raped
2. Girlfriend and housekeeper raped and murdered
3. Elderly Friend beat to death
4. Girlfriend OD's on crack
5. Girlfriend disfigured

2017? Wrong pronoun usage?

I'm a little concerned after all the sjw outrage, that they will have altered or toned down some of the movie.
