On the one hand I like competition, on the other hand, the more successful this is, the more and more streaming services are going to come out and then we're all right back to cable.
It's already pretty bad if you watch shows on a lot of networks.

Netflix, hulu, Disney, Amazon, YouTube, apple.. standalones like hbo and showtime, and if you want hallmark, mtv, bravo, etc, you need sling, philo and/or fubo.

Upside is you can cancel streaming platforms for periods when shows are lacking.

I don't know how "cable" for streaming would work.. I think the latter group (sling/philo/fubo) is basically doing that by consolidating all the random basic cable channels

You guys need bigger families! I'm the only one in my family that forks over money for Amazon Prime, so they all use my Amazon account. In return I have one family member that let's me use their Hulu, another one that let's me use their Netflix. I paid for Disney+, and so far there is zero reason to pay for Youtube or Apple, so yea. Works out for us!

Oh, and for Hallmark, I acquire those through different means and throw em on my Plex server. It's a good time family tradition to watch crappy Hallmark Christmas movies, and make fun of them the entire time!

Ironically though, this is kind of what everyone was asking for 25 years ago with cable. Let people pick what they wanted to watch instead of pay for every single "bundle" the cable company had a deal with.

The biggest issue with streaming competition is it doesnt cone down to streaming tech it comes down to library of content. Apple is going to either fold Apple-vision or buy a content provider. Whether they have the cash to create new content or not, they dont have a library. Viewers chew through content the way raiders chew through raid zones. Take away Disney, Fox, Time Warner, ABC, Universal etc content and the pickings for licensing agreements gets slim.

And of course, after the big players eat up/destroy the smaller/no content library players, then of course comes the cross-licensing agreements (ie.. TimeWarner licensing content only to Disney/Hulu and vice versa). Then we end up the same as before. 3 or 4 giant TV providers.

They released frndly app that has all 3 hallmark channels. Honestly not sure I’d have been able to cancel directv now if that wasn’t there, my wife loves those shows.

Only thing we are missing is espn for college basketball really. And there’s no real way to get that without getting a whole steaming package of shit I don’t want, so fuck em

The biggest benefit of streaming, regardless of how competitive it gets, is we're no longer hog tied by the cable providers to use their overpriced services.

If anything, it should make cable providers reevaluate their offerings and how much they force feed their users.

I've been overpaying for cable for years but I'm finally canceling my comcast package primarily because of Disney+ / hulu.

Yeah i would cancel too. Other than some news here and there, I hardly watch cable. But the wife still insists. Kids dont watch the shit either. They are the youtube/streaming generation, lol.

I dont think its a coincidence that Amazon Prime added a bunch of Marvel flicks to their catalog this week, I am guessing Disney wants help to keep punching Netflix in the balls.

Yeah, we get a direct price from the content owner instead of a middle man marking it up. So even if we end up consolidating them, it may still end up significantly cheaper.

The biggest thing getting cable was the whole contract BS. Now I haven't had cable for over 4 years so no idea if it's better now. The biggest request at the time was having the ability to pick and choose what content you wanted instead of 300 channels where you didn't watch 290 of them. Streaming gets you closer to that but it's still not perfect. I think whats changed from thoughts about streaming going back 7-8 years is I would say most didn't anticipate that services like Netflix/Prime (now Disney+) were going to produce enough of their own, original content where it becomes a harder choice to ignore subbing to multiple services. At some point you are back to paying closer to what cable was costing (especially if you factor in internet pricing) but at least you are not tied down to a contract.

My breakdown since I'm recently cutting the cord (calling today):

Comcast: $210/mth (Internet+TV with most of the premiums) & 250Mbps Internet

Replace with:
Internet 600 Mbps $70/mth
Disney+ with Hulu $12.99
+ Hulu addon Live TV/Sports : $45/mth
Netflix: $12.99
Amazon Prime = Doesn't count since everyone has it for the purchases.
And because of the new Shameless season, adding Showtime for $10.99

Total Streaming: $151/mth, includes everything we watch + more & 2.5x faster internet.
Save $60/mth and could easily cancel Netflix/Showtime & have a slower internet to save $35 more if I want.

If you do not want to 'torrent' or become a pirate, then just subscribe when new stuff is out.

Alternatively, share accounts. I pay for Netflix, brother pays for Hulu, sister for Disney+, another for HBO. We all share them in the family.

Seems Disney outsourced account security. My account got stolen, Disney+ allows account emails to be changed with confirmation from the original email. I only got email informing mine had been changed. Additionally it doesn't even log you out of devices when an account name and password is changed, that how I found out Tatu who's email is [email protected] stole the account.

This took an hour waiting on the phone and the system had no record of my email address ever existing. They was only able to look up the account using thearabianbro's email address, which still had my paypal address as the payment source. Long story short, the account is now closed and was told to expect this take a month to this clear up. Customer service recommends just starting a new account.

Every Disney+ subscriber should be required to watch Tron Uprising and Tron Legacy....then maybe we can get a sequel. Damn I love that movie, mostly due to the soundtrack.

Maybe protect your passwords better. From what I've seen this looks like a couple thousand dummy's who reuse passwords and had compromised emails were the victims not some hack of the Disney service itself.

yeah get a password manager like KeePass (what I use) or LastPass or Bitwarden, let it generate a unique strong password for every site you visit and try to keep two gmail accounts, one for "real shit" (banks, financial stuff, amazon, etc) and another for all the retarded things you do in life like visit FOH or pornhub or facebook. Turn on 2FA on your gmail accounts and have it authenticate against your phone, and try to avoid using credit cards on as much websites as you can - should be using wallet codes you buy from amazon/etc for PSN, xbox, etc instead of handing over credit card numbers.

Keeping your shit secure isn't super crazy hard but way too many people either 1) use dumb passwords like "password" or "12345678" 2) use the same password everywhere 3) use the same email address everywhere 4) don't use 2FA on the primary vectors in their life, their gmail account and facebook/twitter/etc
