I'll watch to see just how well they piece this together. It could be very good or it could be significantly less entertaining than HP. I think it merits worth seeing just because the source material. This could end up being Guardians of the Galaxy of the Harry Potter series or it could suck.

Yeah, they didn't explain anything at all, other than it takes place decades before HP and Dumbledore is in there somewhere. I was sort of "meh" when I saw Farrell. He's been great in some things and garbage in others. I don't know if he seems suited to HP stories.

This movie is hard to call. On one side I enjoy the Harry Potter universe but on the other side, I want to see more of the same people that made up that universe. I think the Guardians of the Universe comparison is a good one but there are some differences. GotG could have not had anything to do with the Marvel universe at all and it still would have been a great movie by itself. This movie is strongly attaching itself to the source material without any of the characters that made the original stories so great. The music should have been different as a start, and maybe it will be. I will at least monitor this movie and see what the reviews say.

good call on the music. touching on HP theme is ok, to get us in the "its Harry potter related" theme.. But it should have transitioned into a time and place appropriate theme.

I feel a bit dumb for not noticing it right away. But I DIDN'T even notice it was the 20's on first viewing. So used to HP being castles and shit ignoring the modern world, I didn't really even catch the time here.
1920's... This is great Gatsby, Bioshock:infinate time period... Where is the jazz, big band, swing? Why not a jazz version of the HP theme?

The most interesting part for me is seeing the wizarding side of America, albeit many decades pre-Potter. The world of HP is neat but very tiny in the books, would like to see her explore it more.

All I'm seeing is the Danish Girl: How to Train Your Dragon edition. Not to mention for a movie with fantastic beasts in the title you see what 2 maybe? Love the idea of exploring America's wizarding world but I just really couldn't give a shit about it in the 1920's not to mention I don't feel like Rowling is capable of using the historical dynamic of that time, especially in America, that isn't a series of tropes.
