It's official: FX is spinning itself off into a new channel called FXX, which will launch in September with four pre-existing FX series: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "The League," "Legit," and "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell."

All four shows will be migrating to the new channel, which is replacing Fox Soccer, and should be available in 74 million homes. "Sunny" and "The League" had already been renewed for these new seasons, and FX ordered additional ones for each to carry those shows through the fall of 2014. "Legit" was also renewed, despite modest ratings this winter, and "Totally Biased" will expand into a five nights a week talk show when it moves to FXX.

The quartet will be joined by one new comedy, to be determined, and the goal is to expand to six primetime comedies in 2014 and then add the channel's own original drama series down the road.

The goal is to have FX feature 7 original dramas, a handful of limited series(*), and 4-6 original comedies. FXM will feature movies, repeats of acquired shows in the FX library like "Two and a Half Men" and "Mike & Molly," plus at least one miniseries per quarter. Ultimately, Landgraf wants to have 25 original scripted series airing annually across the three channels, which combined would put FX close to the output of the traditional broadcast networks (who, of course, air that much on a single channel).
Currently don't get Fox Soccer, Fuel, or Fox Movie so wonder what this fall is going to look like when Fox gets done with all the shuffling/rebranding.

It is a bold (and seemingly strange) move - remember, FX didn't even have enough dramas to air one on Wednesdays last spring, and now they are going to cover programming a network with just their dramas?

It's by no means unprecedented - the Turner Networks essentially do the same thing with TBS (comedies) and TNT (dramas) - but they only manage to cover that much turf by airing, um, uninspired (to be polite) shows like the Tyler Perry comedies and endless Law & Order repeats. Can Fox cover that much turf without lowering their standards dramatically?

Man, I remember back when FX very first started out, and all they ran was like "Son of the Beach" for hours on end lol. They have come a very long way.

I think the thing FX/FXX has going for it is that, unlike TBS/TNT, they have a parent company that owns a major primetime network. That presumably means that, until they have a solid enough of a block of original programming, they can either bring a lot of syndicated shows from the past over, fill the hours with replays of their bigger shows from the week, or play movies they have the rights to.

Do like a 2 hour "The Real Life" of archer movie. It's just him wandering around his penthouse in a bathrobe organizing his closet, drinking scotch, playing pin the tail on the woodhouse, watching burt reynolds movies, and building lego sets in his spare room.

And sleeping. A good 90 minutes of archer passed out on the couch.

I would certainly watch that!
