This is a thread for past games that flew under the radar that are still worth checking out today.

PS1:LSD (Lovely Sweet Dream).

The game was built as a dream simulator and consequently, is one of the craziest games ever made. It is a first person game where you interact with your environment to further delve into your dream. There is no winning/losing, characters, or story to this game - you're just there to trip. Dreams have a large element of randomness so playthroughs are never the same.

SNES: Lufia 2

One of the better RPGs on the SNES. Combine a non-angsty Final Fantasy with Zelda puzzle solving and then add pokemon, a casino, dragonballs. Strong story, great gameplay, and tons of stuff to do on the side.

Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden:

A pretty well known game, but most people I've talked to only watched videos of it rather than play it. It's an absurdly funny game that parodies the genre well. The production value for the game is high and the game mechanics are done well. Watch as Michael Jordan gives your son Hoopz Type 2 Diabetes, explore the Tomb of Dikembe Mutumbo, melt stuff with cyborg Vince Carter's laser eyes, and save furries dressed up as Huckelberry Hound.

Alpha Protocol

Kind of a mass effecty + metal gear solid + james bond spy RPG. Tons of paths through the game and dialogue options. Really enjoyable and is usually 5-10 bucks on steam.

Skies of Arcadia - Dreamcast originally then released on the Gamecube.

RPG mixed in with ship battles. I enjoyed the fuck out of this game.

NES:The Magic of Scheherazade. RPG/Action hybrid with time travel and really cool world.

I plan on making a whole write-up and introduction in its own thread sometime this weekend, but Monster Hunter is a great series. It is insanely popular in Japan and is slowly getting popular in the West(US/Canada/etc).

Luckily it is available on the Wii, PSP, Vita(PSP game just on Vita), and soon Wii U and 3DS so there isn't a lot of excuses to miss a game. If you can read/speak Japanese than you have even more options.

Not really unknown games but still, Ico and Shadow of the Collossus(they bundled them in a HD remake recently for PS3). Also Rez for the PS2, musical shooter, awesome game. I'll throw Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines too, it's on sale every now and then and is definitely one of the greatest western RPGs I've played.

I played that recently and it goes into the "good ideas but deeply flawed" category. It's interesting to play if you are curious about game design and interactive storytelling, but if you are looking for a good game... well...

SNES "Lufia 2" is an amazing RPG! +1

PS1 "Azure Dreams" is another one I loved that I don't think ever got too much attention

SNES:E.V.O.: Search for Eden. The gameplay has always been a bit clunky, but most people I talk games with have never played this one. You go through 5 time periods in earth's history eating other dudes to evolve into the strongest life form. Sometimes your evolutions end up looking seriously retarded.

Enixactuallypublishedsomereallysolid games during the lifespan of the SNES that don't get a lot of attention. I guess they did some stuff with the playstation too, but by that time Everquest had taken over my life.

Lots of good picks. Shadow of the Colossus is great. Azure dreams is a decent roguelike. Going to try Metro 2033 and LSD tonight.

This. Was a great game when it came out. Tried to play it last year and it felt pretty dated.

Ogre Battle, on the SNES, I think should be remade and updated it was so good.

I played it like last year for the first time and sure it looks like ass but not THAT bad I found, and the game itself was so amazing I didn't give a fuck.

Rez is the most aesthetically pleasing game I've ever played.

I've played Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines a bit. Never beat it, but /v/ seems to swear by it.

Fuck yea, EVO! I never bothered to become human, but it's one of the highest offensive evolutions in the 5th world. IIRC, You can also briefly become a dragon if you are a dinosaur capable of flying in the right level.

Metro 2033 - available on Steam.

Spooky as shit, difficult, rewarding, survival
For some reason, the people I game with have played every goofy Russian shooter.

Singularity.

At first, it seems like almost a run of the mill FPS until you start unlocking god powers with the TMD (sort of an all-encompassing device used to solve puzzles and own enemies). Once you have that, the game gets much more fun. I also really like the atmosphere with the time shifting between 1950s Russian military base and what it's like 50 years later after it's been abandoned.

Have to second Singularity, I had a lot of fun with this game.
