It was always bad but I've played consistently since 2017 so I have zero incentive to spend unless it's a retarded amount. Eventually you do kinda catch up.

The main bad thing about SWGOH was the rotating super rare events for the best characters. Having two chances per year at best to complete those events was how they injected serious FOMO into the game to drive spending. It was fucking dumb not being able to ever get those characters unless you spent.

As expected they just put a LotR face on Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, and that's fine. But unlike GoH where memberberries (and fantastic art) did a lot of heavy lifting, here you get a half dozen guys you know (not even all the main characters are in yet) and a whole lot of chaff. Most of the artwork is very generic fantasy and rather blah.

Not warning anyone off, but not recommending it, either.
