What's the deal with this game these days? I played years ago (around 2011-ish) for a while and really liked it, but eventually just sort of drifted away. I kind of forgot about it until recently. Is there still any population left or active dev teams on it? How is the game these days?

Ran around a bit over the weekend and it seems more active than the last time I played a couple years ago. Maybe it's just the server wide LFF and Trade channels making it seem that way but there's activity at the top end. And it looks like it's been getting releases according to the dev forum.

Release Notes & Known Issues

I was surprised by the amount of content they'd added in the last two years. Subbed for the month so I'll be playing for at least that long.

I still give lotro a few hours a week and was doing some old moria content and still found people to run instances with. Server population seems healthy enough, I think there was a pretty substantial merger a few years ago to help things out. They keep cranking out content and even with Mordor coming soon the have plans beyond that. Still one of the best looking games landscape wise out there, they captured the feel of middle earth even if the combat is crappy.

I've often wondered if they would go past Mordor. IIRC, Aragorn was quite busy for several years afterwards fighting wars with orcs and the various broken pieces of Sauron's armies.

Game is still plenty active. 10th anniversary started today and there were shitloads of people everywhere at the anniversary areas. This was the middle of the day on a US server.

Would be nice to play with some people. I struggled to find a set group to play with. Played a Warden to 64 but honestly I never did figure out the while Gambit system.

      Update 21 Patch 2 Release Notes
      Update 21 Patch 2 Release Notes

      Here are the Release Notes for Update 21 Patch 2, released on Tuesday, October 10th.

      Of Special Note:

      Plateau of Gorgoroth Instances

      Bravely enter a place of fire and anguish in "The Dungeons of Naerband", and help the rangers thwart Lhaereth in her attempt to unleash a new Great Plague in "The Court of Seregost"! Update 21 Patch 2 includes a new 6-person Instance, and a new 3-person Instance, which are now included in the Mordor expansion. Players who already own the Mordor expansion will receive this content for free.

      New Alliance Quests

      Twenty new repeatable daily quests are now available! Find these new quests by speaking with the Expedition Organizers in each of the Allegiance halls (Vórthi, Tancram, Glórellas, or Aster Hayward.)

      Mount Collection Update

      The Mount Collection has been updated to match the style of the Emote and Pet Collections, and now list every Mount available to you! The Mount Collection has a unique feature that causes every character to have their own collection maximum, since some Mounts can no longer be acquired. If a Mount is no longer available, it will not appear in your Mount Collection unless you already have that Mount. Find the new Mount Collection by pressing Shift+C by default, or click on the Collections menu item.

      New Filtering Options:

      A new Main Menu item has been created to allow players to filter out sounds, quests, and items, either for the current player, or for your entire account! If you've got something you never want to see, hear or get again, you can access the Filter panel by pressing Alt+R (by default). To remove any filter, drag the item, quest, or sound off of the filtered list.

      • Loot: To add an item to your loot filter, drag it from your inventory to the filtered list, or press the button in pending loot. Anything added to the Loot filtered list will not be awarded to you again. For Master Looter, the Master Looter will see an assignment dialog for items meeting the quality rating of the fellowship rule, even if the item is filtered. For Need/Greed/Pass, only players who do not have an item filtered will see the dialog option for items meeting the quality rating of the fellowship rule. For filtered items, players will not see the Need/Greed/Pass dialog, and the response will automatically default to Pass when the timeout for the response expires.
      • Quests: Filter a quest by clicking the filter or account filter button at the bottom left of the bestowal dialog or quest log. Quests you have filtered will no longer attempt to auto-bestow, no longer appear as quest rings on the Mini-Map radar, and no longer appear as a quest ring on NPC or mob heads. Quests that cannot be abandoned cannot be filtered.
      • Sounds: To filter a sound, go to a place or situation in-game where the sound is heard, click the Record button to see a list of all sounds currently playing, then drag the sound to the character or account filtered list. Sounds you have filtered will no longer plays as audio in your game client.

      • Factions are now ordered from newest to oldest in the Reputation panel.
      • The Clear All Filters button in the Options: Key Mapping panel has been renamed to Clear Search Filters to avoid ambiguity with the new Filter system.

      Misc

      • Party member voice chat volume can now be adjusted individually. Party volume control visibility can be toggled by clicking on the party voice chat icon for party members. Default Group Volume preference has been added to the Voice section of Audio options. Use this volume slider to set the default voice volume level of new group members. This setting is 75% volume by default.
      • Mordor Lost Lore dialog is now affected by the Voice-Over sound volume setting.
      • Lua - We recently changed the way LOTRO ListBoxes work to fix a category of UI bugs. This may have side-effects for Lua scripts dependent on the broken behavior. If you encounter issues with your existing Lua plugins, you may want to change the ListBox orientation from Horizontal to Vertical and remove the SetMaxItemsPerLine limitation setter.
        • The Lua interface is being updated to provide four new functions for the ListBox control. Backward compatibility supports calls to deprecated function SetMaxItemsPerLine. They should be used in the place of SetMaxItemsPerLine( value ) and GetMaxItemsPerLine() which are being deprecated. Backward compatibility changes have been implemented to support existing calls to SetMaxItemsPerLine.
        • number GetMaxColumns();
        • void SetMaxColumns( number );
        • number GetMaxRows();

One day, if I get desperate enough I'll go back. The memories of endlessly grinding wargs/crebain/corrupted trees haunt me to this day and prevent me from putting on rose colored glasses.

They flipped the switch to put high elves and the mordor expansion in the funnymoney store. I've got 24k built up from the points I get for lifetime so I grabbed a high elf and did the intro.

They did one of those cool flashback mode things. I kind of wish they had gone back further to an origin specific event (betrayal of gondolin, fall of nargothrond, dagor bragollach etc) but I guess that would have been more work.

They don't have rights to that IP. They can't touch anything outside the LOTR triology

Ah ok, well you can pick from a few origins from the elder days. Gondolin and Nargothrond and Beleriand which was the whole continent that sank under the waves. I guess Beleriand implies that you were a wanderer or something.

I can't really remember what the main Sindarin realm was called. Thingol and Melian ruled it.

They can't use those because those are from The Children of Hurin, The Unfinished Tales, and The Silmarillion. They only have rights to the three Lord of The Rings books.

Thingol ruled Doriath.

It would be awesome if someone made an MMO set in the First Age.

No I think that was Finwe / Fingolfin ? Forgot who was next, Turgon maybe? I guess we could just google this stuff but it's fun trying to remember :D

Seems like Thingol ruled the elves that stayed behind on the continent when the early elves were rounded up to head to valinor. I think sometimes called dark elves but not like drow. I'm guessing these people's became the Sindarin / Woodland elf folk.

Thingol ruled Beleriand from Doriath. The House of Hador were his subjects as were the lords of Nargothrond. They called him the Lord of Beleriand, the King of Doriath, and sometimes the High King of the Teleri. He was much less epic than Finwe High King of the Noldor because he had never seen the Two Trees of Valinor.

Finwe was High King of the Noldor which means he was the most of the most epic. Even though the Noldor were far more epic than the Sindar, the Sindar were still the rulers of Beleriand because the Noldor were recent transplants... and also they were falling from grace and Thingol had the wisdom to see this.

I actually think the First Age lore is better than the Lord of the Rings. It would be such a great backdrop for a game... but then again I don't trust any game devs not to ruin it with microtransactions or something.

The First Age material, being less known, has also remained more pure. Its reputation for inaccessibility has protected it.
