Never saw Hereditary, was it good?

Bro,

Hereditary is fucking AWESOME. Wacth it in a dark room, turn off your phone, and don't let anyone distract you for any reason. It made me feel more dreadful and uncomfortable than any movie ever. Perfect acting by Toni Collette, very well written script, filmed amazingly. It's fucking great. My favorite horror movie, ever.

Yeah, it’s definitely one of the best horror films to come out in the last decade. Up there with The Witch. It’s a slow burn, but has some pretty crazy scenes that will catch you off guard. One of the best aspects is lack of music ques during anything that might be remotely creepy, so no loud jump scares telling you to jump out of your seat. The whole thing is in the vehicle of a family drama, but with horrific elements, which helps with the willing suspension of disbelief.

It’s also worth a second watch just to pick up on things you may not have noticed on the first viewing. I caught it in the theaters then waited a bit after it was on video to take it in again, and was enjoyable trying to piece clues together.

If you liked The Witch, or movies like The Ninth Gate, The Changeling, etc, you’ll enjoy it.

Holy shit, this whole time I thought Aster directed The Witch too. Not sure where I got that from, but they are so similar stylistically. Either way, Hereditary was so good it makes this an instant must see. Trailer looks fucking sick too.

I loved THE VVITCH so it sounds like I really need to watch Hereditary. I'm also very interested in this movie. I love psychological, uncomfortable mindfuck horror.

Also parody horror, but there's been a long while since a good one has been made, and for very different reasons.

Do not like the hidden video or jump scare shit - one is dumb the other cheap. I also shy away from torture porn after having watched all the Saw movies, pretty much got my life's fill from that. Those and Hostel. Don't mind gore, as long as it's not gratuitous or the point of the movie.

My favorite was Event Horizon.
Pandorum.
Cube.
The Cell.

Hereditary is not really like any of those. It's not even like the VVitch. It's a tense as fuck family drama tossed with some weird horror/occult stuff but i can't recommend highly enough.

Family drama horror occult sounds like the VVitch to me, heh. Guessing the time period makes it largely different.

If you go look around on Reddit in the sub for this movie you can find a 2017 script which matches up pretty closely. Based upon Hereditary, I expect this is going to blow a lot of Wicker Man doors off. On the page, it doesn't necessarily jump out at you but then if you apply what the director brought with Hereditary, it could be Next-Level(tm).

Caught the first matinee yesterday morning, and there were only three people in the entire theater, including myself. It’s a good movie, and I think it might be a great movie, but I’m benchmarking it compared to Hereditary. Hereditary is a superior film to me, but it’s kind of comparing apples to oranges.

It definitely starts off slow, and takes a while to ramp up (2.5 hr runtime), but never felt bored. The movie looks great, and there’s lots of clues / symbolism for the audience to puzzle things out if you enjoy that. Wasn’t scary in the slightest, though. There’s a sense of dread because you know something is going to happen, you’re just waiting to see how it all unfolds.

It’s been a long time since I saw The Wickerman, but with that being the most similar movie I can think of, it blows the doors off. Still a better movie then most of the shit made by hollywood, and worth the price of admission. I think it’ll take a second viewing to see if my thoughts change.

At the end of the day, it was worth my morning, and I’m looking forward to Aster’s next film.

Pretty interested in checkin this out. While reading about it I saw lots of people talk about how good Hereditary is, and it being on Amazon Prime I decided to watch it for free because why not.

Holy shit what a fucking dog shit turn that movie makes. Absolutely great for the first half then it just spirals down into some B grade edgy possession bullshit. Cant wait to see Midsommar tomorrow.

I saw this 2 days ago. Really enjoyed it. Hereditary affected me on a MUCH MUCH deeper level than Midsommar did. Midsommar was fine, nothing amazing about it, but not in any way bad. Just wasn't amazing. Absolutely recommend seeing it.

You will probably hate Midsommar then.

On the topic of Hereditary, the director seems pretty keen on putting everything right in front of you the whole time. He does it in Hereditary with Paimon's symbols being everywhere (as all the cult work and the symbols used basically line up perfectly with the real life myth), he does it in Midsommar with the artwork, the throw away comments about what is going on in the commune and the runes everyone wears.

Midsommar is closer to the Witch that Hereditary. It still follows a lot of the same themes as Hereditary, but its approach to story telling is closer to the Witch.

And as for the themes, Ari Aster must have a fucked up family life or something. Both of his movies are just all about family, whether it be the one we are born into or the one we choose, but in such a twisted fucking way

Can't wait to see this, forgot it was coming out this week.

Yeah, when I first watched Hereditary I was completely lost at then end. I liked it just fine regardless, but had to turn to smarter minds on Google to get the whole picture. I re-watched it again a few months ago and it was crazy how obvious everything was laid out and it made me really appreciate it even more.
