Personal FTP Server Help

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up an FTP server on my home computer so that me and a few friends can access a shared folder with large videos (50+ GB) without having to physically transport hard drives. I've got users and groups set up and I can connect to my own server just fine, but when I useOnline FTP testerto test my connection, I keep getting connection timeout issues. I've allowed the FileZilla FTP server access through the Windows 7 firewall and I've also opened up port 21, so I'm not sure why the connection is timing out. Does anyone have any ideas?

Did you enable port forwarding in your router as well?

Yeah. Here's the log that I get from FTPTest.

There should be a setting in there to use your routable IP address for external connections. Your server is returning its internal address, which is unroutable over the Internet.

I haven't used FileZilla in an age, but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.

If it's still giving the local IP instead of the external for the FTP test, try unchecking "Don't use external IP for local connections". Though, I'm not sure why it would be doing that, unless your router's port forwarding setup is very strange.

Okay, so even though the FTP Test isn't passing, other people are having no problem connecting to the server. But now, each folder is showing up twice in the FileZilla client. Any ideas?

Eh if you are still having issues with setting up the FTP server just create a private torrent of the file and send it out to your friends. This way they won't all be tied to downloading directly from you and can download bits from others that already have the files inclusive of you.

Or use Plex, pony up for the premium version that allows access from anywhere(not just your home network) and give you friends the logon info.

Streaming would be easier than downloading 50gig files from you at like 5mbps or whatever your upload speed is capped at.

Not a bad idea. But right now, everything seems to be working fine, except the folders show up duplicate.

But will Plex let me store hundreds of GBs and use unlimited bandwith per day? Most cloud services have bandwith caps that they don't say anything about. (Screw Dropbox.)

Plex is not a cloud service, everything is streaming from your computer where it is hosted. Plex is just a web-based interface for accessing the media stored on your PC from anywhere. Shouldn't be any storage or bandwidth limits.

The ftp test says its failing on the pasv ports you set, 50000-51000. Those need to be forwarded in your router as well. That may or may not be related to the duplicate folder issue. I've never seen that. Maybe it has something to do with the way you have your ftp user accounts set up, I would start there after fixing the pasv ports.
