I recently broke my wrist on my dominant hand. It was so severe that I required a plate and 8 pins. I'm 45 years old and I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and how was your recovery? Are you able to do the things you use to prior to breaking the bone? Just really hard tying to do everything with your weak hand. How was the road to recovery?

A plate and 8 pins?

That's gonna be a long hard road to recovery, and it will always be a weaker hand than it was before. Sounds like you fucking crushed it.

Sorry for the bad news, but physical therapy is going to be an absolute must. Knees, wrists, ankles, and shoulers are all complex joints that don't heal terribly well or all that quickly. But of the four, wrist is the least bad. So you've got that going for you.

Basically, don't slouch on the PT. Obviously you'll have arthritis in that wrist... but once the casts come off be vigilant about the exercises. If they don't give you any, make sure to ask for some.

I broke my ankle in my 20's. It will go out on me sometimes. I'll be walking and all of a sudden that ankle won't support weight. I never had it set though. At the time I didn't even realize I broke it, only in retrospect.

But, the upshot is that you might actually come out of it 90% with the PT... and obviously, arthritis.

I broke my wrists three times in my later teen years (skateboarding and cycling). None of them were as bad as yours sounds, and of course it was at a much younger age than you, but I have zero problems with either side now in my mid 40's. Generally speaking though, as I am sure you have heard, its going to be a slower healing process the older you are.

The good thing is you'll get really good with jerking off with your left hand(or right - whichever is your off hand). I've had carpal tunnel issues and now use my left hand mainly for jerking off, even though I'm right handed. It also frees up my right hand to use the mouse to browse porn. Embrace this opportunity.

I fractured my ankle like 6 years ago ( I was 28 then), right at the bottom of the fibula, and walked on it for the rest of the day thinking I just rolled it. That night when I took my shoe off and it was all black and blue and my foot blew up to football size I went to urgent care. I wore the boot and all that for a few months, but I didn't really do the PT afterwards and it's really easy to re-injure now. It will swell up from just standing for more than an hour or so without moving around and tends to ache when there are big temperature changes. That being said, it's not all that bad as it doesn't really limit me in what I do (I was never going to make it in the NFL anyway).

I shattered my right calcaneus bone(it's the ball that swivels your ankle) when I was 25. I had just been laid off of work and had no insurance, so I also didn't do the requisite PT. I'm 41 now and it still bothers me on occasion, but once I got really active in the gym over the last several years, it bothers me much less.

Save your money because the removal of the apparatus later in life is "elective" surgery.

Plate in my lower leg with 13 pins/screws when I was 38, still bugging me 7 years later. Hurts when the weather changes and seems to get cold.
