Remodel/Wall removal questions

Looking to open up the wall between our kitchen and front dining room area. Obviously at some point where the large opening is there used to be a wall and then there was a doorway going into the room that they closed in. I want to open up the whole span (as much as possible anyways), which is slightly over 12 feet from wall to wall.

What size beam would I need to run across the span? Could I do some sort of combination of wood & steel to make the beam smaller/not hang down as much?

Talk to your local lumberyard (not Home Depot/Lowes). They usually have software to figure that sort of thing out. That said, assuming it's a weight bearing wall, that might be a job that would be worth paying a contractor to do just for the peace of mind that you haven't made your house unsafe.
