People still play Rift? (not being a smartass, legitimately surprised)

Anything significant been changed since...two years ago?

Not really, just checking in from time to time and playing around for an hour or two.

They are so hard up for cash now that they are dropping the free expansion model they promised when they went ftp and now are charging for this one. Such a good game flushed down the toilet by a company that felt it wasn't enough to have a great mmo, they needed to be like blizz and ncsoft with a dumb ass launcher full of games.

Looks OK but can't imagine ever jumping back into Telara without a full blown sequel.

I always liked RIFTs art style. Reminds me a little bit of Stargate... anyway, for 40$ you will easily get your moneys worth out of the expansion as long as you like the basic game structure/systems of RIFT.

The teaser site looks a lot like a WOW-expansion-site: RIFT: Starfall Prophecy
You even get a free lvl 65 boost for one char with the expansion, exactly like WOW these days ;)

You still use SLI? With the new cards (1080/1070) its practically never necessary any more (unless you have a 4K display and dont want to turn down some options).

Anyway, at least the RIFT client is using a "true multicore" architecture since this spring. That made a hell of a positive difference to most people. I went from ~40fps to ~60fps in towns (3440*1440, 980gtx). Its much smoother than before.

My biggest issue is respeccing. Every other year I log in, see if I have to respec and log out because I don't care enough to do it. Maybe I'll dedicate an hour and figure it out. Looked it over some more and it looks pretty damn cool. And by look it over, I mean I mostly just scrolled through a few screenshots and watched the trailer.

I tried this game again a few months ago. The biggest thing I noticed was how shitty it aged. When it first came out I was in awe of the graphics. The game play was also just more WoW questing style shit that was boring and I quit after like level 20. Also, the bullshit they added when they went F2P was just confusing as fuck to someone who is starting new.

Charging $40 for the new class and $35 for a new soul is some bullshit

Rift was fun up untill they took away pvp gear and you actually had to do raid content to gear up.

Closing the first rift though in the early days. Good times.

I have a gtx 690. So short of disabling SLI, it's kind of a big deal. Until this generation of GPUs, most stuff was a side grade at best so I didn't bother upgrading to a single card.

Rift at release was probably my 3rd favorite MMO behind VG and EQ. The elite dungeons were no fucking joke and only 2 groups of us were clearing all of them for a pretty long time. The world was slightly bland/repetivie but there was a fuck ton of different things to do to keep you farming and min/max'ing. I really enjoyed the first 2 raid zones as well. Early on there was A LARGE variance in average players and skilled players when it came to dps/hps and general raid performance. I loved it and had to quit due to a new job :(

Chloromancer (original version) was the best class in any MMO i've played outside about the top 5 classes in Vanguard (RIP VG CLASSES). The better you micro managed and maximized damage the better that translated to heals, was so much fun and the skill cap was extremely high compared to most healers. Then they fucked up the class and god damn made the healing portion static numbers vs scaling off your damage and it ruined the uniqueness of the class so much.

I made one trip back and did some raids but just couldn't get back into it. Suprised to still see it around honestly but it had some good qualities. Fuck i want vanguard 2~

RIFT was definitely one of my favorite theme park MMOs. Group/raid contents were great. Unfortunately, the game slowly went downhill after Hammerknell.

Do they have some kind of catch up mechanism gear wise this expansion? One, that does not invole buying packs for money?

Sort of, you get a level 65 boost when you preorder. Beyond that, not really

The free boost will only be available once the expansion releases...

If you want gear play the game, enough time until the expansion releases (rumor: middle of november) ;)

My favorite part of Rift was how toxic the alpha/beta community was. They were almost as bad as the VanGuard alpha forums. I made a post criticizing the game for being a WoW clone and the first few replies were people telling me that if I didn't like the direction the game was going it I should go back to WoW. Learned really quick to just submit my feedback via email and avoid the forums.
