I liked Interview With a Vampire alright but I gave up on The Vampire Lestat in like twenty pages.

I never read them but years ago Yahtzee (the Zero Punctuation guy) did reviews of Anne Rice's porno rewrites of Sleeping Beauty

I think Rice eventually found Jesus?

I read her book Memnoch the Devil and she definitely kinda intertwined Christianity into her vampire fiction mythos so I'd say yeah... she was definitely searching for many years based upon her works. An artist (or author in this case) can't help but imprint their own self onto their works so yup... this makes sense.

To add... Memnoch the Devil was a fascinating story; essentially blending Darwinian Evolution with Christianity.

RIP... she was a talent.

She is the reason I am such a sucker for Vampires/Vampire stories. Pun not really intended, but it works.

Damn, Interview was released in 1976. That bitch wasn't just ahead of her time. She crystalized the entire aristocratic vampire archetype fleshing out their culture and society. She's the William Gibson of vampires.

That book had to be quite the mind blower in the 70s.

the early portion of Vampire Lestat was definitely a bit of a slog. I'm not as big on that series in general as most, but the first 3 books were pretty good. Body Thief and Memnoch were a bit too much.

its been a long time, but was Memnoch the one where Lestat travels back in time to meet Jesus or was that Body Thief?

The former, not the latter. Lestat goes to Heaven and Hell to aid the devil in soul deliverance, yeah.

yeah, i thought that was pretty funny, i wasnt offended, but it felt more like a trope. like everyone always fantasizes about meeting famous and important people in the past to see what they were really like. its why people who claim to have past lives always say they were somebody famous. nobody ever says they were a goat herder who shovelled shit their whole life in the 15th century.

I gave it long enough for "Louis' story was full of shit I'm a rock star now lol" so like, 20 pages. I'll move it out of the "never" category though.

so you dont like the "Harry Sue" aspect? well if you ever pick the book up again, Lestat didnt just pick up a guitar and start wailing on it like it aint no thang. his human origin story was pretty amazing and it was due to that human origin story that Lestat was chosen to be a vampire by an aging vampire. i cant say much more because i really dont want to ruin it for anyone. but as i said, there is some heavy world building in that novel and Lestat before he ever makes it to "present" time is an exceptional vampire even among other vampires. part of that is due to the blood he drinks, but as i said, he also has a pretty fucking cool human origin story.
