Got very drunk with him one night in Madrid (my wife was making a perfectly awful sci-fi movie with him there in 1989). A truly lovely man to be around. I remember him telling some hair-raising stories about his time in-country in Vietnam and also about how it was working with Kubrick. Wish I could remember more of what he said, but ... alcohol. RIP.

What a great guy. He leveraged unexpected fame to do interesting things with it. Mail Call should never have existed and I'm damn glad it did.

I watched him sign a baby once in 29 Palms when he was promoting some charity for prosthetic limbs. I heard him tell another Marine he could have retired well before he got famous just from his and his wife's pension but he kept going because he had a good thing going. God only knows how many Marines he's recruited by quirk of fate. I doubt that was Kubrick's intent but here we are.
