In Soviet Russia, you don't read the book, the book reads you. The creature effects look cool, I even recognize some from my childhood.

Got to this. it was just ok. 7 or 8/10. not as good as Paranorman.

Set in 1968 for some reason. While the 20's-70's is great for spooky stories, this uses it to add some weird Vietnam subplot.
adds unneeded "racism" to the plot.
hey, hey. you are telling a ghost story to kids and teens to watch before Trick or Treating, not writing for Vice magazine about how racism is bad, and Nixon was a bad president.

Witch and her book story is a bit too derivative.
Mentally troubled girl in the 20's ends up in an institution, and electro-shocked. forced to make confession for poisoning kids, she didn't do. now, tells stories to get revenge on her family that made her confess. Ghost relents when plead with, and promised to tell her true story.

How, I would have done it. Again, Jumanji scenario. Ghost likes to tell scary stories. but in the end, thats all they are, stories. the movie even has a repeated mantra, of stories inspiring, stories telling truths, etc. 100% should have had the Ghost scare them all to "death". then, had Stella wake up with the ghost, and have a talk about her wanting to be a writer too. and sending her off with the book to tell more stories, with everyone waking back up where they were. It was just a story.

creature effects are good as noted.
