Then the Netflix logo showed up and I thought "Welp, gonna be a garbage script carried entirely by Farrell so, maybe a boredom watch"

Edward Berger is pretty good and this was probably his blank check movie after Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front. Sure looks like one of his movies too so I doubt he had any interference. While the VAST majority of Netflix movies are awful they do release a couple a year from really good filmmakers that are good and their shots at awards.
