I leveled a Druid for a while One fo the best Dungeons I came upon was in a cave i had this orb and I new there was somehting there but couln't figure out how to get in.. Low and behold s NPC eventually comes walking by says a Phrase and disappears. I say the same thing and wham in side.

Later I got some friends and we explored this dungeon that then opened into another realm or something it was one of the most memorable experiences playing Vanguard.
I had the exact same experience and reaction from that dungeon. Later found out it was a part of a questline from the nearby starter villiage. Tursh I believe it was? The Human settlement on Thestra.

Really miss this game.

I had a max level fully geared bard, and an APW geared disciple. I used to duo the bard with a disciple guildy through just about everything except raid mobs. We were both raid geared so It was pretty easy, but when I'd play my disc I could still solo and duo a ton of content. Bard also duoed well with a dark knight due to their self healing and the bards massive damage. Blood Mage also duoed well with DK and dsc, but had nowhere near the damage output as the bard, though your survival goes way up.

I really had some good times in that game, I miss those dungeon crawls and classes.

Seriously. It rustles my jimmies knowing SOE/DBG will burn piles of money into gay projects like EQN, but can't even keep 1 server for VG up and running....it would be a great intern project to fix the bugs and keep the server stable.

Played the game way late into its life and thought it was pretty damn fun. Was a complete ghost town though and don't think I saw another player for the month or so I played it which really killed it for me

Vanguard was also a -huge- world. I rarely ran into other people, even really close to release. Getting a group together from different ends of the world was literally a couple of hours worth of adventure just to get together and to the dungeon. Starting in Qalia and Kojan and trying to get to Dargun's Tomb was a -long- freaking journey. The only time I'd ever see people would be in Hathor Zi crafting/diplomacy. Outside of town, it wasn't common at all. There was also just a lot of... empty in certain areas. Qalia certainly suffered for it.

I'll second what Rezz is saying, massive world indeed. That and there wasn't exactly a lot of information out there about where to go when leveling. I'll never forget when we were exploring around some islands, I think one of us had a lev so we were just running around and came across a nice little island of giants that we charm killed for a while. Super dangerous as I had no idea how my charm worked and they hit like a truck. Shortly afterwards one of our groupmates found a hole on one of the nearby islands that lead to a dungeon that I swear I could not find any information for online. Obviously it was tested, but it was quite the experience constantly discovering new content that you and your crew had to figure out on your own. About a day afterwards our rival guild Voodoo (this was PvP) discovered the dungeon as well, this was maybe 2 weeks into release so the PvP damage wasn't exactly balanced, so we all hid in a corner except our sorc who stood out in the open to bait them. This place had super tight corridors possibly unbeknownst to our rival group and our Sorc blasted them with a PB AE, killing them all within seconds. Suddenly war broke out for this little hole in this world of pixels. I still have quite a few images I saved from those days. I was a massive shithead and made it a part of my day to ruin others.

I am sure some of my upper guildmates would recall some excellent stories to share. Warhound, Teko (Sinnes), Archiba, Keyoto.

I spent about 2 years recruiting for my guild, Raze, taking off where Tyen left off after abandoning his guild he was going to lead. We had maybe 70-75 members come release, it was quite a punch in the gut to have less than 25 members 3 weeks into the game. There were a couple days where we spent hours just trying keep the game from glitching/disbanding our group when someone zoned or did certain actions. Definitely some good times, however very short lived.

We even had this hilarious story where one of my guildmates was depicting a professional gamer. Spent about a month applying for the guild before my guys said he was cool and I guild tagged him. He was just too much of an idiot and too terrible of a gamer to be a professional gamer of any type. I don't know what happened next, but somehow I was working with a guildmember from Hate (Sullon Zek), Bone, I believe was his name, to dig deeper. We worked together to find his actual name and found his myspace profile that happened to be private. Bone made a profile, pretending to be some model or pornstar or something and what we found made us shit our pants in laughter. Guy was some fat white kid under house arrest for gang related activities. The professional gamer who he was pretending to be was black, which made matters even more hilarious. Bone then proceeded to write up the most hilarious article on Hate guilds forum that, to this day, was the most hilarious thing I have ever read. I wish I could add more, but this was over 10 years ago. I found the article a few years ago but I believe all the images were broken that REALLY added to the overall hilarity.

Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted we are still working away on it and should have parley's and harvesting available soon to test. The framework for crafting has also started.

Sorry if this has been discussed to death already, but did you guys determine whether "chunking" was a solvable problem? I vaguely recall it was caused by invisible zone seams and essentially a load trigger once your character hit the "zone line." It seems like a lot of modern engines allow texture streaming and loading that is effectively hidden from the player, but I wasn't sure how daunting of a task it would be to add such a feature to a decades old engine.

They're emulating the server's response. Chunking is all client side. They'd have to find a way to decompile the engine code and rewrite it to even try.

I think it was an unreal limitation, but I had never used it. I remember at the time complaining that they were recompiling shaders all the time and wondering why in the world you'd ever do that. Now that I've used Unreal I see why it was happening all the time.

With a SSD and newer hardware chunking is hardly noticeable. It is a short screenfreeze that alerts you that you entered a new chunk basically.

I don't see an issue once this releases.

there was a optimization post on the official boards -- not sure if it exists in some form now. aside from editing the .ini file was to create a ramdisk and a symlink/junction of the shader directory.

I didn't have an issue with chunking in the original game tbh. It was just a pause for a few seconds- no worse than zoning in EQ. Actually, a little less onerous even.

I guess the difference is EQ was advertised and built on zones, Vanguard was advertised and attempted to be built being seamless. Because it was their great innovation that in part justified the claims of being next generation they had to put a ton of time and energy into trying to make the world seamless, and the more they worked on it the worse it seemed to get. In the absolute best case scenario, at launch, the game paused for a few seconds. Worst case, though, it would freeze, crash, was suspected of causing memory leaks, was suspected in a lot of the group issues, and my favorite when you chunk and it turned you around and would then rechunk you in the other direction.

I'll go ahead and file not having any issues with chunking with the claims by people who never had the game crash and never had to relog to fix groups and never had to /flush and never had to do any of the things everyone knows was very widespread. Red flag with such claims is people use add in a "tbh" because everyone knows they're full of shit.

I was an early adopter of SSDs and it solved the problem for me chunks would load in under a second.

I never crashed at a chunkline, but i think i had every other issue you mentioned ( mostly early on ) and I always would /flush when i entered a new chunk even through the end of the game.

haaa, is that the same Woolygimp from here? was he as autistic then as he is now, or has it gotten worse over the years?
