Intentional or not, the US has done a damn fine job of making crime the best logical choice some people can make.

Sure, sure, there was whatever fuckwitery got them pinned in the first place; most of the time that is truly on them. And some will always be Goons. But there's a portion who want to come out and stay clean, but look at the choice between furniture mover/burger flipper, under the table <something>, or go back to what they know.

In my experience it totally depends on the type of conviction, I know A LOT of tradesmen with a record. If they have violent shit in their jacket, yup they are fucked. If it was a drug problem and did court mandated treatment, they give them a few shots at getting it together. I have hired more than a few convicts straight out of the pen. In some ways they are easier to manage, the court and parole officers keep them in check, and losing their first job out can get them sent back fast. About 1/3 of the guys I have had straightened up and didn't go back in.
