The big Porsche SUV is Cayenne, not Cheyenne! You can't really compare the Macan to the X5. The X5's competitor is the bigger Cayenne. Unless things have changed, the X5M still holds the performance SUV crown. The Cayenne is nice, but Porsche will nickel and dime you for every single item you add to their vehicles. There's literally dozens upon dozens of option tick boxes. You can easily add 50% or more to the base price in options alone simply for performance, let alone getting into aesthetics.

Anyway.. I need to find someone who buys me a new Porsche after crashing a BMW into a mailbox. How does that even happen? Too early in the year for snow / ice.

So my Honda minivan just hit 250,000 miles. I've been doing all maintenance myself for the last 8 years. It's a 2003. Still reliable as fuck and totally solid. Regular maintenance is the only cost. Just for shits and giggles I priced out the contemporary new version of what we have. Holy fuck, sticker shock. I guess we will keep this shit running for as long as we can.

And, your car probably isn't worth much if anything as a trade since it's 14 years old. So, huge investment to upgrade at this point.

Yup. We're riding this thing to the grave, baby. On the up-side, it's totally reliable and has no rust. Keep on keepin' on, I guess.

It's considerably more cost effective to keep an old car on the road, despite maintenance and repairs. Unless you want or need something else, keep it going and save a bunch.

I've gotten pretty good at buying 2-3 year old used cars, and selling them 2 years later. Usually take a $6-8k hit on a $40-45k used car like a Lexus LS, or BMW X5. So thats $3-4k/yr. Not too bad, considering they are still under warranty, often come with service included in the purchase, and they are relatively late model.

It's more or less equivalent to buying a $30-40k new car and driving it 10 years and then selling it for peanuts or lighting it on fire (which is about what happens) and buying another new.

It's working out for me right now anyway so I'm gonna keep riding it.

The X4 M40i is the BMW matchup to the Macan. I almost considered getting it but the X4 has some a configuration conflict that really turned me off though. You can't get both the driver's assistance package and cold weather package at the same time like you can with the X5. I went with a 340xi instead and it also lets you include both cold weather+drivers assistance at the same time. I just got past my initial 1200 mile break in period so I am happy to push it hard now but now it's almost time for snow tires =p

BMW's maintenance plans are no longer transferable to the second owner like they use to and starting with the 2017 models it only lasts 3 years with less items covered. Having a warranty that covers everything is sure nice though for a 2nd owner.

Fully assembled aside from a water pipe I have to sand blast and clean up. Next up is dropping the tank to put in a high flow fuel pump and clean up the fuel sending unit so the fuel gauge works correctly again.

Sorry for the shitty picture, I couldn't pull the stand outside due to the complex doing construction in front of my garage.

After using the proximity unlocking and push button start of Honda's Smart Entry for a month I don't think I could ever go back to pulling keys out of my pocket.

Honda gave me +5 laziness

Keyless doors and push button start are +10 to lazy. I've only taken the key out of my pocket to use it because I wasn't sure if the car was locked once I got 50 feet away.

So I kept smelling gas driving the car, ended up pulling out the fuel tank and the fuel lines. There is an evap tank in the rear cab of the car that has 5 lines that go to the gas tank. Most of them were rotted and gas soaked. Pulled the tank, cleaned it, then realized I should just send it to the radiator shop to get tanked correctly. So once I get that back next week, I'll delete the evap tank and put all new fuel lines in between the tank and the feed/return lines. Got my AFR in and had to replace the transistor for the coil. I'm like...95% done and then I can drive this thing normally, assuming I don't blow something else up. The tranny leak was pretty bad and covered the entire underside of the car with oil. Took me a full day to clean it all...

The problem with these keyless doors are this. After 10-15 years demand will be so low for them that they will stop manufacturing them, just like every other part for a car. So I fully expect for any modern classics to absolutely useless once the fobs wear out. Dealerships will tell us to get fucked and buy a new car.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Madruk, fuck fluid leaks after you spend days cleaning the bay, that shit is infuriating. I hope my drivetrain will hold on long enough to swap it out with a 6 speed tranny and a Mk2 Supra rear-end.

They'll just make little conversion kits to make a place to stick a key or insert the fob + chip if there's demand for it. Or the dealers will continue making the parts, if there's demand for it.

Dealers stop making parts when it's not profitable to do so. If there's actually a need for this, they'll keep making it.
