Poe being the leader actually makes sense even from TLJ. The guy spends the first 10-15 minutes of TLJ doing stuff in an X wing that even the best Force user pilots in EU would struggle to pull off. Literally the greatest pilot that ever lived, and all that.

Found racing and blitzball to be far more engaging. They're all super repetitive, but hot and cold was the worst of it confined to the smallest area. Watching my "beak level" increase didn't really move the needle, either.

That's more like 13-15. 7-9 EU was the Zahn Thrawn trilogy, and frankly I assume most older Star Wars fans will continue to consider those the best 7-9 they could have done.
