It would be cool if paladin secrets weren't so weak, or if there wasn't a significant chance you'd already drawn into some of your secrets by the time you can play him. I'd definitely rather play the neutral 6 drop that gives you a random paladin card.

If you're grinding gold mage, I would just experiment with different builds of tempo mage rather than switch to slow control mage. I did control warrior for the majority of my golden warrior wins and it took a life age.
