One thing to be careful of if you have your own wallet is having a lot of small amounts of Bitcoin, if you go to send a larger amount it's going to cost you more in fee. It's not as simple as .1+.5+.3.+.1=1. More inputs will increase the kb size of the transaction, which increases your cost to send.

Most nodes have a 72 hour timer on transactions where they will forget about a transaction if it hasn't been confirmed, provided no one is relaying the transaction. I've read where people have sent low or zero fee transactions that are so low it will never confirm and they can run a few start...

I guess the theory is that people will mine for the transaction fees and that what will keep them mining. It only takes one person mining to confirm a block.

Transaction fees are suppose to replace mining rewards. That's why the block reward halves. Something really needs to be done about the block size. There are something like 150k unconfirmed transactions right now and fees are pretty high.
