The only reason casuals dont care about lore is because it does not affect their getting epic gears, when your deity and origin matter to how npcs treat you then lore matters. Right now zero new games have deity, racial and actual choices affecting their class design.

If they want keying to play a role why not let crafters in on the action? If a crafter or a guild has the key they should be able to duplicate the key through rare/semi materiels out in the world, this would alleviate back keying. I also like what EQ1 did where every 5 people with keys could...

I was surprised to hear about it for an Everquest game, If done right it could be really amazing. It just depends on the freedom they gave the designer for not only the maps but also game types. If you can create new gametypes then that would be something.
