Look at it this way : during filming, it's a lot easier to replace the director than it is to replace the main actor. Also, for every story of an actor being a pain to work with, you find one of a director being a tyrant on set.

Cronenberg's first two feature films (that feel a bit like overlong student films really) have been added as DVD bonus to some of his classics. One of those was already titled Crimes of the Future, but I have only a very vague memory of it. It's a none issue since this one is not supposed to be...

With this type of stories, it's difficult to find the right balance between keeping things mysterious and moving the story forward. I feel this show makes a pretty decent job at finding this balance. Also, the whole structure works well (some people in this thread did not care for the 7th...

Most recent good movie with Willis is probably Motherless Brooklyn.

I had seen this talk by Kevin Smith a few years back, but rewatching it today gave it a whole new shine, because the producer at the heart of the story, Jon Peters, is a very funny secondary character in Licorice Pizza (played by Bradley Cooper).

Going through Smith's filmography, I think I have seen 12 out of the 36 movies he acted in. The best one I have seen is without a doubt Six Degrees of Separation followed by... Ali ?

Actually saw that a few years back in a film festival. I remember seeing it in the program and thinking "What a great title and I am ok with the classic premise, please be good !" And It was not :( I can't say I have seen many filipino movies I enjoyed. To be fair, too many of them were bad...

It's not one big community, but it makes social sense and also business sense for streamers to interact with each other, especially those who are heavily leaning on the "just chatting"/"Reality TV 2.0" type of content. The biggest / most connected streamers are those able to put together the...

Awsome and absurd action ? Baahubali 1 and 2. A two part over the top indian epic. The trailer makes it look normal. I assure you it is not ! :D

That seems like a very difficult show to make as opposed to something like Last of Us. Here there is not much interpersonal drama to work with and the journey is 90% combat... I guess you could go super experimental and focus on "story time on boat with Kratos", but that's not going to happen.

I would not be surprised if several open world games get delayed because Elden Ring raised the bar.

I guess they are only vaguely similar (teenager + technology + war), but I associate DARYL with WarGames :

I think the problem this type of movies faces now is that you can no longer make the special effects the main selling point. I am sure improved tools and know-how allow digital effects to get better and better, but it is way past the point of improvements no longer being noticeable by the...

It's not that this movie is bad, it's more that it is a paint-by-numbers adventure film with the flattest of dramatic arc. There are some amusing ideas here and there and, if you accept that these characters share barely more than names with those of the games, the cast is ok. The attempt at the...

There are some huge shifts in tone in that movie, to the point you wonder if anyone had any idea what they wanted to do. The comedy is also not funny at all, the action nothing special, the plot lame (is that scarf thing supposed to be a joke ?) and not engaging (are we supposed to root for the...

It's a joke that comes at the end of some resolved drama no one should care about.

Spoiler for today's Wordle

Unattached but functional body parts in a living room only reminds me of the music video for Herbie Hancock's Rockit ! I tried a little google-fu, but to no avail. More info are needed. Were the dismembered teens the main characters ? Why were they dismembered ? Anything more on the plot or...

Nope. I have not read Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, but I feel there is something akin to it at work in this film. Del Toro is not trying to film a carnival. The reference point is other films that filmed carnivals, it's mimicking the aesthetic of the representations of the thing...

There is a musical in the nominations. You do know what it means.

Good thing you figured it out, because your description would not have helped :D

I guess I missed something here. I thought the problem was a mix of drought in Taiwan for an industry that requires a lot of water and covid protocols impacting productivity?

Is this semiconductor manufacturing thing still going on or is something else at play ? It's more than a bit crazy that 14 months after release, you still need to queue to get a PS5 like it's bread in the USSR.

Not to be confused with the poignant 2004 film of the same title by Olivier Assayas in which Maggie Cheung tries to leave drugs behind to be able to reunite with her son.

I kinda liked how that last chat between Naomi and James encapsulates the way this season played out : many things lie ahead, but for now let's enjoy the fact that something got concluded.

It's a bit strange to have several plot lines and plot elements setting the stage for what comes next when, for all we know, nothing will come next. I guess they were in a bit of a conundrum : they are adapting a book serie that is done so what do you do ? Find another end point and discard...

The movie is a bit aimless (but Haim-full! *ba-dum-tss*) in a slice of life kind of way, with both characters trying to find themselves and each other. Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits and Sean Penn are hilarious in their small parts. Hoffman and Haim are great. I enjoyed it but it's a weird brand of...

Many movies are long without them justifying such length. On that we can agree. From there you go and make one of the dumbest statement ever written on this board. All types of stories can be great and not all stories work best in all media.

How obscure was Wiseguy and Dream On in the US ? Also, Parker Lewis Can't Lose. EDIT: Oh! It was a mini serie but : Wild Palms. Best beginning of anything ever.

This was not good. I am on board with the whole beginning. It's heavy handed and clumsy at times with the meta commentary, but there is still something pleasant in this fictional ouroboros, inventing a "reality" that could inspire a fiction made of the events of the first three films. Having the...

That new trailer moved me from pragmatically pessimistic to cautiously optimistic. It might not be a great Uncharted film, but may be a good adventure film. The flying ships part feels like something out of a Gore Verbinski movie and I am always on board for that!
