    Kids & Food

We cook pretty much every night so our 3 year old gets a plate of whatever we are eating. She is really good about trying everything, and if there is something that she doesn't like, she doesn't have to eat it. If she doesn't like anything that we are serving, we usually have bread and some...

IT/Software career thread: Invert binary trees for dollars.

We rarely hire new graduates. Most people come in with 5-10 years of experience so the requirement of launch and users is a way to bypass that for exceptional candidates. This is all for client-facing consulting work...not staff aug.

If they launch and have real users, definitely. I've seen quite a few senior projects turn into products.

He doesn't get in the door without something that he has delivered on. It could be an app or a product or some bullshit for someone else, but he has to have something. My point is that while he is learning, he should be building something tangible.

I'm in charge of a practice at a technology consulting company. When I am evaluating candidates/resumes, I care a lot more about a proven history of actually delivering products vs a degree. I really don't give a shit about what degrees people have as it rarely directly translates to success...

Marriage and the Power of Divorce

Our first date involved hockey and lots of high gravity beer. Love at first sight. It was hard finding any one in Atlanta that actually enjoyed hockey prior to her. They kinda tolerated it, but would be doing shit on their phones the whole game. She actually paid attention and was curious...

This talk of MUMPS and EDI brings back memories of my first job out of college with a large HIS software provider (actually mentioned in the wikipedia article unfortunately). I did quite a bit of work with X12 specs in the insurance and billing worlds (835, 837, 270, 271, 997). They are...

Also, don't be afraid to job hop every couple years. More than likely that is going to give you the biggest jump in pay and there are not very many shitty jobs in the software engineering space these days because good devs are such a commodity. If you are treated like shit, leave. It's...

    Bosch

Reading Connelly's Facebook and Twitter, it seems like he is pimping the show pretty hard and that he would be part of the full series build out. I don't think he has specifically mentioned what his role will be going forward if the series gets made, but I think the show's casting sets it up to...

Agree on Bosch. I've read most of these books as well and a few of the actors are from The Wire, so I'm hooked. The After - My wife and I did not like it at all. Acting was bad, story was bad and the reveal was cheesy.

No, I don't think that quantifies substantial interest. My point is that they just don't care. They have the opportunity to get free money right now to start making the game they want to make so of course they are going to do everything in their power (including self-funding the KS to get to...

Because they can get free money from the public? We're talking about a group of people in their 30s and 40s that have all been part of high profile successful games. These guys should have little trouble coming up with a few hundred thousand.

I feel pretty confident that this sort of thing is a daily occurrence on Kickstarter. Clearly we need to set up a service that will allow people to funnel money into their projects "anonymously" to screw over (potentially) the other backers.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I get that, but when they are sitting on a $600k check with no strings attached, they are going to find a way to get that check into their hands. I am sure they have convinced themselves that there are enough people interested in the game to satisfy their arbitrary metric that they are going to...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

"Wasn't enough interest" is such a completely arbitrary measure. If you've got 6000 people raising 600k, would having another 2000 people show interest really mean that much? Games have historically been made in a vacuum with millions of dollars pumped into them before they are even announced...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

So what if they do? I would fully expect them to do exactly this just to release whatever funds had been raised by the kickstarter. They aren't going to be overt about it (ie, creating a $200k Visionary Realms donation tier), but it is still in their best interests to get this thing funded...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I think it is a very real possibility that, if the Kickstarter looks like it won't hit, Brad and co will pledge the hundreds of thousands required to get over the hump just to release the funds. Let's say that we're at $400k with a day to go. Brad and his cohorts can drop the remaining 400k...

I also made the "KFC chicken" over the weekend. It was decent and the spices penetrated the meat pretty effectively, but I am not sure why you wouldn't just roast the chicken with the same spice mixture. I was planning on taking it out early and putting it under the broiler, but that shit...
