It's not a bad game. It just wasn't the game people thought it would be.. and it didn't help that WoW launched the same day.

EQ1 was based on the Tanarus engine. EQ2 was a whole new engine, so my guess is they figured the game would be so much better looking that it would just draw everyone away from EQ. Of course, like Vanguard, another game I worked on before joining SOE, the PCs required to make EQ2 look really...

More than just Holly.. Quite a few SOE peeps were in ML. During my interview at SOE to join the EQ team, she asked me what my favorite moment in EQ was, and I started in on that story.. I wish you could have seen her face when I was going through it.. She stopped me about 1/2 way through and...

We were also all alone in Plane of Time, clearing it for well over a year before another guild ever got in there.. Hoss straight up dominated Druzzil Ro for years.. EQ, for all of its shortcomings, and terrible game mechanics (by today's standards), built REAL friendships.. I still talk to a...

Why? I had a lot of fun back in those days. It was awful too in some ways, but that was the mechanics of the game.. We didn't really know any better. Honestly, my FAVORITE memory ever in EQ, was when we ported into TOV to the TOM portal, and proceeded to wipe out every dragon in TOV with 35 ppl...

    Well, now what?

No clue. I can't imagine an actual artist I worked with in my entire game dev career would have ever been happy with those animations. They were god awful. I never played with Luclin models. By far the worst of the change was the Ogre and Troll. Both of those races lost any of the humor and...

I've never liked the Luclin models. Ever.

In a lot of ways early EQ did this by accident. Unique looking armor came from specific things, so when they guy strolled into EC wearing a full suit of some armor, you knew what he'd done and where he'd been. Dyes killed that completely.

In a lot of ways, Utnayan is on the money. Early EQ development was very well funded. It was pretty much around the time EQ2 was near released though that the money stopped flowing into EQ, and almost ALL of the profit we generated went to make other projects happen. In fact, most upper...

    Well, now what?

That's only true if you don't force people into specific rolls. But force, I mean don't allow people to build a min/maxed jack of all trades.. As an example, you (through content) force people to have a true tank to stand up to the ass-beat of a boss mob.. something a hybrid tank/heals can't...

    Asheron's Call 1 & 2 F2P, player-run servers

I thought researching spells in AC1 was pretty damned inventive.. Problem with that today is literally everything is out on the Internet, so people don't have to actually learn anything for themselves, so it really cheapens that experience.. I never really understood why AC1 didn't get a bigger...

Completely unnecessary, but thanks. I'm honestly just happy I was able to do some pretty cool stuff in a game that meant so much to me.. It was pretty surreal to wind up working on the game that I spent the better part of a decade playing almost like a 2nd job.

Brad's development process is making headway, but when I say making a new game would take less time, I'm talking about a full-time dev team with full funding to make a game. Full art, design, and code team.

Are you serious? You don't see the issue with an invulnerable heal bot in PVP? As for fielding complaints about PVP.. Um.. Heh.. Yeah.. You clearly overestimate the amount of interest in PVP in EQ. You act as though it isn't something we (when I was there) examined. It's funny.. there are a...

The BR thing was a great way for them to hash out a lot of the classes in PVP.. Even if they don't DIRECTLY use those character/class setups, the data is very useful moving forward. On one hand I kind of thought it was trying to cash in on the BR hysteria, but at the same time, it's a very valid...

Are you not seeing where I said PVP IN EQ is dead? PVP in EQ was a bandaid at best. It wasn't ever really designed to be a PVP in any way, shape, or form. Trust me, I definitely understand that PVP is a big deal right now, but that's in games that were designed for it. I LOVE the BR games. I...

    Well, now what?

The only reason I want a base class selection option is to give a real newb level subset of abilities and direction. I agree that allowing people to go completely how they choose from day 1 is a good idea too.. It wouldn't be too hard to allow both starting styles either.
  26. E

    Well, now what?

Not true. Itemization in EQ was very flat overall until around Velious.. Kunark had some stuff, but it was locked behind higher level/more difficult content. Also, I'm not saying it's 100% flat, I'm just saying the growth in items will be slow.. so content coming out tomorrow doesn't absolutely...

Depends upon what you mean by decent amount I guess. You would need several thousand players for it to matter. And not just for a day or two. PVP in EQ has been dead for years. The team would likely be more interested in working on PVP if Zek had more than 30 people playing on it (37 when I left in 2015). So yeah.. Tell me again how so many people want EQ PVP.

    Well, now what?

There is no way to adequately develop content fast enough to satisfy the hardcore 'race to the end' people. They just consume it WAY too quickly. Actually that's not true.. you CAN procedurally create it, but then it feels numbers generated, and not hand-crafted. Me personally, I'd just say...

2 years later... the almost sad state of MMOs in the new era

IMO.. take away the hand-holding nature of modern MMOs. People consume content ridiculously fast today in no small part to the in-game roadmap. Require players to actually figure shit out for themselves again. The care bear crowd won't like it, and it'll sadly be a niche MMO as a result, but...

It depends upon what you're trying to achieve though. If you want to make a profitable game, with a couple hundred thousand players, then MMOs are still going to work fine.
