I pretty consistently hear DQV is one of the best jrpg's ever released. It's a good deal older than ps2 era, but it was touched up (maybe even remade?) for the DS at one point. Easily emulated too. Edit: haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but I tracked down the DS version a while back.

They both have retarded stories and both have solid gameplay. I preferred Origins, but didn't care for either of them enough to beat. You won't feel ripped off, content-wise, with either game, provided you like the game.

Not really a big fan of that shifting pov stuff either, but I thought it worked pretty well here. Certainly had more gravitas than expository narrative stating she beat the shit out of everyone/got the shit beaten out of her, and also she's in another castle, several times throughout the game.
