The only problem with your theory is that the books have been taking forever since the third was released well over a decade before the show started. Simpler explaination is that he has no way to finish this story in two books because of how bloated books 4 and 5 were.

Actually questing turned out to be the fastest way to level 1-60, it just took awhile for the most efficient leveling routes to be plotted and made well known. I remember your line of thought being the dominant position in early Vanilla as the old grind-XP MMO vets made their way from EQ, etc...
