    Crowfall

Yeah the only reason I think Crowfall has a chance on such a small budget is because they aren't trying to reinvent the MMO wheel but are basically copying mechanics from Tera and Shadowbane, already proven IP's. That and a relatively fast testing timeline.

    No Man's Sky

NP. If they open this up for modding and it develops a community similar in size to Skyrim's, I could see someone easily fleshing out space faction warfare, adding player control of systems and stations (since the basics are already there), player built structures and turning this into a real MMO.

    No Man's Sky

They mentioned it would be simultaneous on PS4 and PC. I feel like it'll be 40-50, since they don't have an AAA dev and marketing budget to support. My hope is that the procedural caves and relics will be at least as interesting as Minecraft. If they can get some interesting procedural...

Civilization 5 Complete (both expansions & all DLC) for $12.50. If you don't already own it and like turn-based strategy this is a no-brainer.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

That screenshot is like a girl on an internet dating website taking a picture of herself at the most favorable possible angle to avoid showing her double chin.

Well they've said they're interested in opening up the EK's to optional combat, so why not just make a carebear continent and a FFA continent with destructible buildings? So you can opt out of Minecraft Farmville and into Game of Thrones if you want. The fealty mechanics are only interesting...

I think what people like myself are trying to say is that a lack of anything going on in the EK's could cause a lack of long-term investment in the game. Fighting in the Campaigns might motivate people, but defending your permanent shit in the EK's that you've worked for months/years to build up...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

At best they'll put together a Unity placeholder tech demo. I'm going to remain 100% skeptical on this until I hear that a real publisher has picked it up, which I doubt will ever happen.

Now that I think about it, ACE could make buckets of money by releasing the EK module early as private instances for players to dick around with their Kickstarter rewards and make additional purchases. Like the Star Citizen hangar, admiring your shiny toys even if you can't use them yet is a...

I have a feeling "procedural" in this sense means that Artcraft designs all the art assets to go anywhere but uses the EK tile mechanism to make edits to their random map so the balance isn't total shit. Just an idea though.
  12. T

    Crowfall

Artcraft is doing way better than most game Kickstarters at keeping the info pipeline open, even when they don't have much to say. That'll benefit them in the long run. These guys just act like professionals, unlike some MMO devs I could mention...

    EQ Never

The one thing about EQ Next that makes sense is that a bunch of aviaks/goblins/whatever sitting in a camp waiting for you to show up and kill them is...kinda dumb. Letting the mobs roam around and be less predictable = fun. But then we got SOEmote and swoosh dodge stupidity combat and...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Pretty sure anyone in the industry who knows how much money Vanguard cost Microsoft and SOE would rather acquire an STD than Visionary Realms.

    Crowfall

Cool post from Gordon, but one thing worries me. It cost 18 million and 2.75 years to do SWG, and they want to do Crowfall with a quarter of the money in (presumably) less time. I guess the scope of Crowfall is smaller, but still...makes you worry they're going to have financial issues.

    What did you just read?

I thought it was decent, though I liked Yarvi as a protagonist more than Thorn Bathu. Hopefully the trilogy finishes strong, and I love how fast he's writing them.

I have been a pretty hardcore Civ player since Civ II (shout out to anyone who played Civ 4 mp on the Gamespy server) and multiplayer Civ is fun as shit. Fog of war and variable resource placement makes for an interesting experience every game, and you can easily tune things like world size to...

    Crowfall

I think they'll break $1.5 million, which is probably a good sign. That means close to $2 million when you factor in international contributions. Decent for an indie MMO and their revenue stream will continue if they get good press and word of mouth through beta. In the end this comes down to...

    EQN:Landmark Beta Starts March 26th!

Granted, the players have already made a shit ton of good content. Some of the stuff from the Ogre design contest I'd love to see in EQ Next, and love to walk through with my PC, if it was a real functioning game with mobs and factions and you know, the elements of an MMO. The players have...

    All things Brandon Sanderson

I've just started reading Sanderson, read the first Stormlight book and starting on the second, and making the transition from Martin/Abercrombie and other "darker" sf/f writers to Sanderson is...hard. I know complaining about Sanderson in a Sanderson thread is kind of stupid, but I feel like...

Yeah I'm with the 'EK's should be more than a lobby' crew. What about a Relic that lets you bane a rival guild's EK? That'd be awesome and everyone would fight for the chance to mess up the other guy's trophy case/top tier crafting stations.

    Crowfall

Sounds like they should study at the No Man's Sky school of procedural content generation on a shoestring budget. Though that game has yet to come out too...sigh...

    Crowfall

One thing that worries me is whether they'll really bring in enough cash to develop this game right. They've got $2mil in VC already, who knows how much of that is left, and then they'll bring in another 1.5-2 million from the Kickstarter. Obviously they aren't going AAA in scope or budget...
  24. T

    Crowfall

A lot relies on how good their procedural generation algorithms are for the campaign maps. If they really let the map go wild and create truly strategic combat (like a fortress city blocked off by impenetrable mountain ranges from all directions but one) it could have a lot of replayability. My...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I hope for your sake that you've gotten a solid contract, Joppa...I was one of those FoH lurkers that really believed in Sigil and Vanguard, only to see that game collapse due to Brad's catastrophic financial (and overall) mismanagement. And we all know what happened to the poor saps at Sigil...

    Crowfall

Yeah it's also encouraging that they aren't afraid to openly make some players better than others (like Jedi in pre-CU SWG). Imbalance is fun, they're right about that. Might just be red meat for the community but that's what convinced me they wanted an old school experience.

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Let's be honest, the SOE employees at Elidroth's level are probably just as in the dark as we are. If anyone knows the real story it's Smed, Columbus execs, and Sony corporate. And I doubt any of them are talking.
  28. T

    Crowfall

Just seems like they could be better if they were actually part of the game rather than just instanced housing...I realize the Campaigns are what matters. I guess if the EKs are just set up like a scoreboard that makes them matter too.

    Crowfall

Here's a question for you theorycrafting bros: Should total available land in the EK's be capped, or unlimited? Taking different approaches (everyone gets free land vs. fuck you there's nothing left for plebs) could be interesting. If they cap total land, it could strengthen the fealty mechanic...

    Crowfall

Ah man they should make the 2mil stretch goal a 13th archetype. I could see an Inquisitor/Bounty Hunter style archetype focused on anti-stealth being cool and super popular, since iirc they had a similar dynamic in Shadowbane.

    Crowfall

Seems like the solution is to figure out mechanics to turn the EK's into a source of potential conflict without making the more softcore players feel like they're going to lose all their stuff. Maybe if you acquire all the land surrounding some guy's parcel and activate lockout mode so he...

They did say EK's can go to war with each other right? So two guilds could mutually agree to trash each other's places as a grudge match between campaigns...sounds kinda fun actually.

I'd like to know more about how the Eternal Kingdoms will be structured. Do they see everyone getting at least 1 plot of land for free; will there be more or less "desirable" locations that will get snatched up early? Do they envision true player-run cities emerging in some of the EK's with the...

    EQ Never

Years of misplaced hype leading to endless frustration when the game gets dumbed down in beta, followed by rage when the game is released in a rushed and buggy state, followed by entrenched cynicism in which you vow to never again trust or play another SOE/Daybreak product. Oh, I thought you...

    No Man's Sky

Looks like they're finally releasing multiple gameplay videos. Galaxy map has a neat interface but they need to recolor some of their stars to not be all white.
