A big part of the problems with leveling, motivation and the world seeming empty is a bugged world encounter system. Right now there are no chosen incursions, city invasions, and almost no outpost sieges by the chosen in new eden. Similar problem in sertao, though they do have the comm tower...

On the sci-fi front a good read is Heinlein'sThe Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. It's a good read about a revolt on a lunar colony in the future. Many of the themes and social commentary makes you think a bit.
