Yah, not very similar to EQ1. I'll definitely try it though, it looks intriguing. Many games have had destructible content, not to the extent in EQNext but we've all seen barricades that you have to attack and destroy to continue on your path.

    Everquest II

I'm playing a bronze account coercer at the moment. Just stay out of all the old content. I needed some minitors but didn't realize the beetles where place holders and you had to kill beetles to get minitours to spawn. Holy crap. Then in many old areas it's common to put the quest givers on...

weakauras is amazing. Blizz could throw out the entire UI, give me weakauras and I'd be happy. As it is now, it's the only mod I use.

Minecraft. We've all played in a sandbox, four boards and sand, at one time or another so we all know what a sandbox is.

    World of Warcraft: Current Year

This new virtual server thing where they combine low pop servers into a big virtual server. Anybody else tempted to roll a character that would be affected by that? Depending how Blizz does it, it could make for the biggest wow server... You know what I mean.

Guilds are the way to go if you want to socialize. Even the worst MMO out there will let you form a guild and invite people. All of my socializing in MMOs occurred in guilds. Socializing is not always good. I've belonged to guild were we'd call each other faggot and if you didn't like...

Sandbox meaning four boards and sand? The sandbox found in playgrounds? Everyone knows what a sandbox is and everyone has used one. You make stuff in a sandbox. It might be a hole or it might be the Sistine Chapel, but you create stuff with the sand. In most MMOs today, the players don't...

I know what your saying, but I think the word sandbox as applied to MMOs means something different to everyone. This shouldn't be the case since you can go to a playground and see a sandbox for yourself. It's four boards and sand. You've probably played in one as a kid. There's no PVP...

So the analogy is a sandbox, four boards and sand, that you find in playgrounds. That said, Minecraft or Second Life are the MMOs most like a sandbox since you the player can create stuff.

Some of the best, best as in most capable of completing the raid, guilds I've been in it's all trash talk and f-bombs. People didn't care about each other so much as to finish the content. I like my current guild. We talk about our morning commutes and other old people stuff. And we don't...

Falling out of love with gaming

Play pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons. You can get groups online, play with Skype and there are even map programs so you can share a map. Dungeons and Dragons is why a lot of got into RPGs to begin with.

    Well, now what?

The only really different game out there is Second Life. Most other MMOs are still firmly locked into DIKU MUD style. Second Life is about as sandboxy as you're going to get but most people log on, don't have a clue of what to do and log off.

    Origin of the Word 'Sandbox'

As I stood in front of my class that first night, I dug deep inside myself for the one thing that I stood for, the one thing that would charge up the class to leap into the media with gusto and pizzazz. Then I thought of the magic word: sandbox. To me a sandbox is more than four boards and a bag...

    Diku MUD

I enjoy Aardwolf MUD.It has a webpage. It's not much of an RP MUD, it's more hack and slash. It has a very helpful Newbie tutorial and newbie channel to get you started. Aardwulf is also the biggest MUD. It's not the oldest though.

LFR and LFD were made for people who couldn't wouldn't join a guild. Blizz wants you to join a guild. Why? If you're in a guild, it's easier to retain you as a subscriber. But what happens to all those people who don't have time or social skills or people who want to play WoW as a single...

    Diku MUD

Yah, Aardwolf has been around for over 16 years now, I think they say 1996 on their web page. They had to move from DIKU because of licensing issues from what I understand. But there are many MUD engines out there.mudpy is anotherentirely written in python. This would be the ultimate sand...

    Diku MUD

MUD stands for Multiple User Dungeon. It's ASCII based, so no graphics. Well there are graphics after a sort. You can see the map and that is sort of a graphical interface. Why would you play a Diku MUD? I play one at work to pass the time. I usually have 3 or 4 terminals open and...

New Rule: Should we cull all EQ-Neckbeard discussion from game threads?

Here's how I see the problem. Some guy does some armchair deving in the TERA thread and mentions Guk. Fine so far. The next poster says he's an idiot and Guk wasn't all that. Now we're in a flame war about EQ and some other poor bastard opens up the TERA tread and all he sees are EQ posts...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

I agree with the poster above. Casuals don't want to spend all day in an instance these days. Blackrock Depths took about 9 hours straight to run from beginning to end, doing all the quests. And it joined to Molten Core, the raid. We're never going to see a new instance the likes of...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

I'm hoping that they are still working on the art and animations and there will be some improvement before launch. Saw a dev in an interview and he said that they can't do Skyrim quality graphics and have a hundred players on the screen at the same time so they had to compromise.

I could play a game with minecraft graphics as long as the combat was good but most people wouldn't play a game like that. It comes down to personal preference. How big is group you are a member of? The group that want's a game like you do? If you are luck you are in a big group like the...

People try out other MMOs all the time. If they find themselves as having more fun in their new MMO, they stick with that MMO. It's like voting for your favorite MMO. I do this. Among other MMOs, I left WoW to try out GW2, didn't have as much fun in GW2 so now I'm back in WoW. I tend to...

    Well, now what?

I think this is true. You had to group up for a lot of vanilla quests because the mobs were elite so what the rush to 60 crowd did, not having anyone to group with, was to find a bunch of mobs their level and grind them. And I wouldn't be surprised if Blizz increased the amount of xp you get...

Guilds. All the social interaction you are looking for, you can find in guilds. Guild runs, guild chat, etc. Blizz wants you to join a guild for many reasons, the main one is, if you socialize in a guild you are far less likely to quit. All this talk about no community in WoW or a bad...

    Well, now what?

What I don't see is why there can't be one company that appeals to the masses? Like say there's one McDonald's that feeds the masses and then a Chipotles which feeds a niche. Seems like the natural way to me. Does McDonalds have a big effect on Olive Garden?

    Well, now what?

Getting mad at WoW for ruining MMOs is like getting mad at the Ford Geo for ruining the car industry. There are people who like Ford Geos, can't afford a Lexis or want an F150 and I say good for them. Dark Souls is a single player RPG that is very difficult, imo, to play. I'm sure...

    World of Warcraft: Current Year

I usually run with my guild. Sometimes I use the random queues, LFD, LFR, battlegrounds, but I don't expect much from the people in the randoms and I'm usually not surprised. Not that my guildies don't go AFK or ninja stuff, but at least it's in the family.
