Just like any genre, everyone is trying to copy the leaders (DOTA/LOL) but put their own twist on things. Some are decent, some are terrible. Thing is with MOBAs you need a critical mass of players to actually be successful, so it's difficult to get off the ground.

It's very difficult to carry from top or bottom as a newer player like you said. You'd need to play some kind of hyper splitpusher like Tryndamere or Nasus and know how to do it effectively. And that's hard to do. Or you'd need to play a character like Rengar that can roam the map every minute...
