Fairly sure that's how all affliction resists work in all FromSoft games. Increasing your resistance just makes the bar bigger, don't think it affects the rate at which you will gain "points" of it.

I'm always up for improvements on genres that have been forgotten as people were mesmerized by flashy things like 3D, first person perspective, or graphical fidelity. Pixel art wasn't a necessary choice, but it looks like they're doing it well enough for it to be good.
