I wouldn't call it a conspiracy. It's a lot easier to do design without having to worry about the implications of flight and how some things will be completely trivialized (e.g. the Kirin Tor WQs). If there's no flight, there's no problem, and you don't have to spend extra hours designing around it.

If you are, as you say, super duper ultra casual, just use ilvl. Yes, it can gimp your character, but only inasmuch as you won't perform like someone who raids at the higher end. Do you care about raiding at the high end? No? Then just do whatever.

I'd say hunter over lock, yeah, but either would be helpful. Warriors don't really bring as much to the table aside from Commanding Shout, but they're good dps. We've been melee heavy in the past.
