Japan also has events for burst frogs and similiar creatures called imps. They come in different colours and are used to upgrade your units stats. There's also another type of burst frogs I believe which will allow a unit to carry two spheres at once. So you can definitely grow your older guys...

I haven't played in months, but from a quick glance at the patchnotes the warrior still seems to be fine in PvE at least. That is if Greatsword/Axe is still the way to go; I doubt a 5% damage loss on the first hundred blades swings will make anyone switch over to the hassle that is a PvE thief...

Just straight up unit level made the biggest difference in the totem fights for me. I have a fully leveld 4 star squad with one maxed 5 star unit and the fight's really easy. Takes a long time, but I'm never in danger. But fuck getting the dark and light ones, I'm never going to evolve my units...
