Volume controls. How do they work? That my integratd's volume control. no numerical readout, no marks around the dial, just a little indentation on the dial. My dad asked me how I know to set volume levels where I do. He was over to give a listen today with his mighty 4k-capped octogenarian...

Oh. country living. I suddenly find myself near where fresh venison can be had. I need a recipe. I have not had fresh venison stew in almost 20 years. I should go to the recipe forum.

I have my listening room cruisin' thanks to the new Magenpan LRS's and so that room, except for getting a kewl throw rug (like 6x12), is a-ok. I really would love a dry sauna. Not a steam room, those are major pita's to do right, since you are basically putting a mold paradise in your house...

Sennheisers have been top of the heap level mics and headphones for decades. IMO sometimes part of the fun is experiencing a piece of history. If I didn't have grado's I'd be coveting a top-end sennheiser pair of headphones, personally. In fact I need to stop thinking about this thread right now.

Well, fuck you. I hear "natural" hearing loss (ie, just aging not "damaged") peaks in one's late 60's, so my goal is to hold solid to 10k or hopefully better till 70. For reference, my dad is 82 and his cuts out at 4k in both ears. It's fine for conversation, but noisy environments do not...

Microsoft buys Fallout creator Bethesda for $7.5bn

Back in the 90's you played Daggerfall and dreamed that some day Bethesda would release a true modern Elder Scrolls game with post-Doom graphics. And then they did! And then they kept doing it. But as a reviewer I can't be trusted. As a gamer, I am pretty "decoupled" from the state of what is...

    The Astronomy Thread

Ah!! I forgot about the Moon's role in all this. That's right, the Moon is a major part of our equation. Also for life evolution. Tides were probably the laboratory mechanism that gradually grew land life over time.

a molten core also does the magnetic field stuff, right? But That must be a stage of a rocky planet's life cycle. I am guessing someday the earth's core will cool and that will radically affect the earth's strong magnetic fields. They won't be strong anymore. I think that is how it works. Mars...

    Interesting, Non Political News

If frugality is a sin then I'm going to hell. Common sense tells you quality latex is quite durable. All I know is, every time I think about moving to a fresh condom, I think about that climate activist young lady, and put it away. I'm doing my part.

My dear friend and fellow music lover. That is a 1974 Samsonite model 5611. All welded joints. Double strut back legs. Triple hinged seat-to-frame design (and confidence). Classic "floating backrest" design, again, all secured with welded parts. It is quiet as a tomb. It does not wobble...

Going to College as an Adult

Post an update how it goes! We are coming from the same place here: I get a kick when someone figures out this secret. Everything clicks better. And then you can start doing some real work, because you are on top of it. Excellent. I sometimes use military analogies. It's about being squared...

Don't do that wormie. I know I fuckin procrastinate and it never works. What works is somehow -- prayer, sacrifice a chicken, I don't know -- getting on top of it immediately, get it well underway immediately. It is like a reverse stress machine. Some semesters, I was consistently 2-3 weeks...

    Depression

On the one hand, people who mess with benzos who do not psychiatrically need them need to realize they are messing with something more dangerous than they might think, but on the other hand, anyone who has a correct prescription for them, if they don't already know to be extremely careful, well...

    Weight Loss Thread

Been about a year+ for me. On a number of levels it is magical. Functional alcoholism becomes kinda functional, then.... not very functional at all. IME. Like Joe Walsh once said, I only got drunk once i my life, but it was for 30 years. Yeah. I dropped 20 pounds just from that alone. Plus...

Be careful with the hearing. Mine is solid up to 14k on the left, and 13k on the right. I stopped abusing my ears in my mid 20's and I wear earplugs in noisy environments. I wear plugs on long car rides even. Test that frequency range! The high frequencies are the first to go. My hearing is...

    Coffee Thread

I got my first nespresso way back 2004 or 5. Since I hate actually "making" espresso, plus I suck at it, Nespresso has an irrational, emotional meaning for me. Back then I would have 8 espressos before noon, while I worked in my office. You can imagine the diff it made back then. Boom, a...
