Chromecast - the new Google TV

Theoretically HDMI has an Ethernet channel, so if the Chromecast supported it and your TV/reciever supported.... but in reality I've never been able to figure out if any devices support it.

Chromecast - the new Google TV

Some Android devices support Miracast, you just need a receiver or TV that supports it.

    Smartphones

Canonical's problem seems to be that they've come way late to the party and are essentially targeting the market already saturated by Android & iOS and don't seem to be able to find any hardware or telco partners; hence crowd funding. Anyone buy ought to be extraordinarily aware that Ubuntu...

NAS & Home storage - What works?

I run a plain Linux box with fedora with md to provide software raid. Really ease of use for non tech people should not be a big concern as they should be using integration points (eg windows, TV box etc)

Chromecast - the new Google TV

The licence on the chrome cast site is absurdly restrictive, they claim you need their permission to even distribute code which calls their APIs. (Particularly ironic given their spat with oracle over Android and the Java api)

    Windows 8

If the Bing results are on by default and users aren't shown an explanation the first time they use the service its irrelevant whether it can be turned off as most users won't (know how to). Beyond the repugnant factor of ads, its also a massive privacy violation.

Full repercussions of getting email hacked?

Chrome is actually the most resource intensive browser. While Chrome's sand boxing does make it a little more difficult for hackers as they need to chain vulnerabilities, Firefox's security is generally pretty good. Realistically however the most common vectors tend to be plugins, why exploit...

    Buying a car?

Maybe its a regional thing, but there are a ton of Cayenne available used in Ontario Canada. Not sure that its necessarily a good idea either from a maintenance perspective

Put them in a window on the desktop and they're the same as any other application. If Microsoft is serious about the the new UI being the future then we should be vocal now otherwise our use cases won't be part of the story.

    EBook Readers

How flakey is the page turn mechanism on the touch screens? I still haven't gotten around to replacing my keyboard kindle and I absolutely hate the page turns of the kindle app on the nexus 7. Particularly as there doesn't appear to be a way to page turn forward when only using the left hand.

    Windows 8

It's almost like you're being intentionally obtuse. Metro applications are limited for installation from the store only and obviously do not have a taskbar. The search add I've read out is the charms not start screen (where you currently need 3-4 key strokes to navigate from apps to...

    Windows 8

I'm puzzled why any power user who has major complaints with Windows 8 believes that the 8.1 release will fix anything. Adding a start button will help users with a low level computer literacy but nothing Microsoft has spoken about thus far addresses the core problem that the paradigm was...

Sadly I turned on my Kindle keyboard this week only to have the top half of the screen show lines: Toggling it off and on inverts the colours and the reset instructions had no effectIts about 2-years old so its out of warranty, I figure I'll use the support form anyway in the off chance...

    Computer Issues

It does sound a bit like a power supply problem though my experience has usually been the system rebooting; if you haven't try unplugging everything you can (hdd, optical, extra fans) to see if it still occurs.

I can't see why you would think that was a legitimate comparison, Chromebooks didn't have a people who had been waiting for a year nor was Google holding a submission based contest for companies to get a hold of them.

What book did you just buy?

I burned the three books of the Muirwood series this week, they're reasonable and cheap at ~2.50/each on the Kindle. They do have some irritating aspects, apparently stepping on someones foot is like kryptonite in the universe the heroine does it every fight. For anyone who hasn't read it...

    Backbone, Bootstrap, Handlebars, Backlift

We've experimented with mustache templates (Hogan/Handlebars) in the past and recently switched to AngularJS recently. The data-binding is pretty nice, though the AngularJS documentation is lacking in some areas and stable versions don't support transitions so no fancy (or simple) animations...

I haven't tried this, but I imagine you need to close all applications to do this, or can you simply minimize? Windows 8

Bit late, but Windows 7 didn't have issues because it used essentially the same driver model as Vista (which had an entirely new driver model), and I would repeat if you had relatively new hardware from any major vendor there shouldn't have been issues. (I used it from day-1 without complaint)...

Things that grind your gears about shows/movies

I hate all the will-they won't-they romance shit that is virtually every show. The issue with Lost, and a lot of the other arc shows is that they made the plot too convoluted and confusing for people to follow, particularly when they disappear for weeks or even a month mid-season.

    Windows 8

I've been feeling the need to complain about Win8 for a little while now. I've been using Win8 on my personal laptop (x220) since the start of November; I was looking forward to the release, and I liked both XP and Vista from their releases. So I'm not really one to sandbag or hate on...
