Some numbers - the X360 and PS3 both have 80 million units sold. The X360 has been out for 8 years, averaging out to 10 million/year. The PS3 has been out for 7 years and averages out to 11.4/year. Sony expects to sell 5 million PS4s by the end of March.

The 8 player stuff is, as far as I know, primarily for Sports games and such that use a single screen for all players.
