Just played through the main campaign and the challenge levels of Poly Bridge 2 for personal computers. I played the first game a few years back and it's basically more of the same, but with the major flaw fixed, so, yay ! The idea behind the game is pretty simple. Each level is a situation...

Poll new Game Gear Micro console from Sega

Serious question : are there Game Gear exclusive games that are worth playing ? Never owned one, but I was under the impression that the few good games on it were ports of games available on other Sega consoles (and better on them).

With heavy assistance of the replay feature I played through Earth Defese Force on the Switch SNES emulator. We are talking about about the 1991 horizontal shm'up by Jaleco, not the super campy (and suposedly very fun) serie of 3rd person shooting game of the same title. The notable things...

Finished The 25th Ward : The Silver Case. This is the sequel to the japanese style adventure game The Silver Case that I reviewed in the Retro thread. The 25th Ward was originally made for cell phones in Japan and released episodically. With contractual changes and evolving technologies, the...

The wrestler became a thing after the game, but seeing some screenshots, there is a character named Batista, so it might just be a coincidence and a red herring for the search ! A small fish compared to "underwater" but heh :P

Some new games on the Switch official NES and SNES emulators means me spending some time playing them. Played through Rygar again since in this US version it's possible to kill the last boss. Still think this game is weird and rough. The bosses you need to spam-kill are dumb. Maybe I was in a...

youTube's algo found that guy for me and I thought people in this thread might enjoy him : He also makes videos dedicated to a single trick, be it famous classic tricks or, and that's pretty relevant for this thread, tricks featured in THPS.

Just played through One-Way Ticket on Switch (also available on Steam). Sometimes curiosity pays off, sometimes it does not. Sadly this was a case of the latter this time. Browsing the Switch online store I stumbled upon that cheap visual novel with a somewhat interesting pitch : a murder...

    Indie Games

Played trough two indies on PS4 recently, but both games are available on most platforms. The first was Tacoma by Fullbright, the makers of Gone Home. At a fundamental level, Tacoma is a very similar game since it also works on the idea of what one could call archaeological storytelling. The...

    (2020) Assassin's Creed Valhalla

A couple generations of consoles back, games like those of Ubi were made for the so called 'greatest common denominator' of the different platforms, so it was not unfair to say that every version of the game was a downgrade compared to what it could have been if optimized for its platform. I am...

    The Last of Us

There is a lot to unpack here. First there is a false equivalence : people deciding to not play a game because there is something they find objectionable in it (Not enough diversity ! Too much diversity !), is not the same as academics analyzing a game and commenting it through the lens of...

    The Lodge (2020)

Saw it a few months back in a festival... I don't have a precise memory of it other than I did not like it much. I think It had more to do with the type of story than the actual execution though.

    The Last of Us

Many of you sound like people who read the first tome of A Song of Ice and Fire, heard about the Red Wedding and decided to not buy or read tome 2 (though that might be a good choice for a number of other reasons :D ) It is an age old narrative device to have plot points that infuriate the...

    The Last of Us

@Khane @Zindan The first game took about 15 hours to beat in a sprawling world with dozens of characters. I imagine the sequel will be in the same ballpark and we are talking (if I understand it, since I did not check the spoilers) about the design choice of a single character. Also, even if the...

So I played The Silver Case as a remastered version is available o PS4 (also Steam etc) ! It's a PS1 adventure game initially released in 1999 in Japan. It was the first game of Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio created after Suda 51 (of Killer 7 and No More Heroes fame) left Human. Since I am...

    The Last of Us

I am not sure what is more silly : people instantly deciding to pass on the sequel of one of the best AAA game ever made over some leaked plot and visual elements of an unreleased game or somehow trying to tie this decision with the management practice at the dev studio.

    (2020) Assassin's Creed Valhalla

@Tuco The Tenchu serie comes to mind. I guess an argument could be made that there is a lack of recent ninja games that are more infiltration than action, but I think one might want to have more of that without that being an Assassin's Creed game.

    (2020) Assassin's Creed Valhalla

I don't understand why anyone would want a Japan based Assassin's Creed. There have been dozens of games over the years based on different flavors of assassins in medieval Japan, so isn't it more interesting to have the series explore eras and territories that are less covered ? If at some point...

    The Last of Us

@Mao I have a secret for you : the vast majority of stories written for any sort of large scale performance medium evolves in contact with the execution. In part because things that worked on the page end up not working on the screen/scene/game/whatever, in part because the time it takes for...

    Fortnite - Epic Games - Team Survival/Strategy/Crafting/Combat

I am not sure it's very healthy for the ego of the artist to be turned into some sort of intergalatic god, but it sure is pretty crazy stuff. It reminds me of the Sharon Apple concert in Macross Plus (this fictional concert set in 2040 as imagined in 1994 used holograms though).

    Dune (2020)

For comparison, the intro of the theater version : It cuts a lot of the background, but it's less of a mess as it focuses on what will be important in the story that follows. Also that punchline leading to the title is simple but it just works !

    Dune (2020)

I can't answer your question, but I found this and it's surprising the number of small editing differences there are between the theater release and the TV release. Dune (2020)

The norm in movies is to eschew "realism" in favor of being able to clearly see who is who. There are exceptions though, but I would say most of these exceptions are not due to a willingness to be "reaslistic", but as a way to create confusion.

I had it on my shelf for months and finally watched Denis Villeneuve's Enemy. Did not work for me. It's well crafted and acted, but the tension at the core of the story is 100% artificial so it was impossible for me to care. There are hints here or there that could lead to something vaguely akin...

    The Last of Us

There is a pretty big reason : the video game industry is an ecosystem that includes distributors and stores. If you release through digital distribution a huge AAA game weeks or even months before you do so in retail, you are basically backstabbing your business partners. To add a cherry on...

    Bizarre Games in History

I feel it's a bit too easy to find weird things if we list indie games, rom hacks or RPG makers games. For me the real WTF moment is when some super strange stuff ends up on established consoles. Things like... Kuma Uta... (literally Bear Song) a game about writing songs that are then sung by a...
