Well up until AoU, every gem was just sitting around somewhere, with exception of Ronan using one for a short period of time, before it then gets locked up again. Now, one of them is literally inside an android's head, and he has immense power because of it. Perhaps it's that?

Thurs night has already started, last week. The 4 people who stayed for the whole thing got exactly 300xp, so are level 2. Not sure about Nite1 and Orcmauler, but they did get at least some xp. Although I can't imagine that small difference would matter much.
