As far as I know all Beastlord races take a pet from their starter zones. So run around Gfay and pick something that isn't already taken. Woodies took the tree things, the wolves are already taken, so wasp, brownie, orc pawn are about all that is left.

There are always new people coming to EQ, some are older, but also plenty of 20 somethings starting out on TLPs. And of course the "played 20 years ago" people coming back to play. It's a trickle not a flood and probably doesn't match the outflow but it's still a thing.
