I do recommend following at least a very basic guide so you don't waste time. Not like waste real world time but Persona 5 is played on a schedule and you can only do so much shit in a day. Certain things can only happen on certain days/conditions and you can really gimp yourself and get stuck...

You really need to just think of it as Forgotten Realms: Divinity: Original Sin. If you want something closer to Baldur's Gate its going to be Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. I think both of these games are going to be absolutely great.

IMO it's games where the critic and user score is about equal that are almost always quite amazing. Bloodborne and New Vegas being examples.

If you ignore all the other idiocy I somehow doubt, "petty revenge plot" will be anywhere near as compelling as the first game. And let's be real. The gameplay isn't going to be anything amazing. Just tolerable.
