The Big Bad Console Thread - Sway your Station with an Xboner !

Considering just about all mainstream news outlet did a paper or three on the PS4 and Xbox One and that consumer electronics stores as well as cultural goods stores around here have pre-order signs, I am pretty sure mainstreamers are well aware of the existence of the machines.

    Having an existential crisis

Thanks to this thread I googled the girl I was in love with in kindergarten more than 30 years ago! Actually, we were in kindergarten together, but it's a couple years later than she bite my hand after I confessed my love to her (the kind of stuff that makes analysts rich!). Anyway, thanks...

    Only God Forgives- Ryan Gosling

Only God Forgives was released in Europe a month or two ago, so I just walked 10 min and saw it. The Gangster I just saw at a movie festival (NIFFF: Neuch?tel International Fantasy Film Festival that also has a section called New Cinema From Asia). Found a trailer btw: PS: the...

    Only God Forgives- Ryan Gosling

For reference, I have seen all of Wong Kar Wai, most of John Woo (NB: John Woo 'early stuff' is mostly comedy - he made 15 movies before A Better Tomorrow) and most of Johnnie To (when he directs that is, because I doubt even him saw most of what he produced) and this movie is still a poorly...

    The Newsroom S2

The problem is not that the rom-com elements are bad (in fact Alison Pill and Emily Mortimer playing manic/clumsy is very amusing), the problem is that there is a pretty broad offer for rom-com on TV and a very narrow one for media/politics fiction, so, in The Newsroom, every minute spent on...

Just saw it today, so I'll drop the following track from 1985's Night on the Galactic Railroad (a meditative, metaphysical and dream-like movie about two anthropomorphic cats who take a train across the galaxy - original, often beautiful, but sadly extremely boring). The music is made by a...

I saw nothing today as I was at a movie festival that always starts with the last week-end of Wimbledon... I skipped films last year for Federer vs Murray, but I won't for Murray vs Djokovic doing 87658764 strokes rallies from the back of the court (unless I catch some of it between two...

Modern video camera are very sensitive, so it can look bright on your TV screen while being pretty dark in reality. That being said, light declining or not, unable to get an answer from the umpire as to when the roof will be closed or not, losing focus in a grand slam semi final to the point of...

    The Tree of Life (2011)

I think you are thinking of The Fountain. A movie that shares some of its ambitions with Tree of Life but falls waaaaay shorter (it is more gratifying as a narration though, there are characters with lines and a plot that moves forward, etc).

Day 8: Plastic man, glass man, canon man and lucky man. I only get to see the first two sets of the Berdych vs Djokovic :/ Djokovicis Plastic Man. His ability to stretch himself to reach the most ludicrous of balls and manage from these awkward positions to still produce very good shots is...

The Wire: Greatest Show Ever Made

I agree that Treme felt like it was missing at least one dramatic arc that gave a sense to where it was going, but in a way it serves the portrait of a city that does not know where it is going. It works more a sociological study than a fiction, but the study is fascinating in its own right.

With the PS3 I started the "Don't buy stuff if you are not done with what you bought" policy so suddenly the list got a lot shorter than in previous generations (also almost no japanese import or 2nd hand games): PS3 Disks (22): Assassin's Creed Assassin's Creed Brotherhood(a gift!)...

To be fair, during the 8-bit era there were computer games that we simply lost track of since there were made by garage developers who would code something, duplicate the tapes themselves and directly sell them to a couple stores in their area. For our sanity, let's assume it was small...

As previously mentioned, I was a bit worried about the game being infuriating, but it somehow manages to be tense, intense and yet have a hilarious 'oh shit!' effect on failure. I am not sure how it pulls that off... possibly because it's so snappy and ridiculously violent and because you...

He is 35 but he also will be ranked 11 in the world comes Monday. Iconic 70's "vibe" Movies?

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song comes to mind for black culture of the '70s. The Conversation for some good old fashioned Nixon era taping. Killer of Sheep is also a reference for a sociological portrait of black suburbs in the '70s. I must admit that I did not enjoy the movie much when...

Btw I saw some of the Kanepi vs Robson match and I think she might achieve great things for British tennis, but not much for tennis in general. She has a useful serve (lefty always help) and some good groundstrokes (particularly the forehand which is rarer on the WTA tour), movement is not a...

I don't think Vogel/Matthews had to be partner with Harry in the creation of Dexter. If Matthews called Vogel after Maria's death to check on Dexter and the Bay Harbor Butcher, she could have easily deducted that the moral guidelines in display in the kills had to come from a third party and...
